We are delighted to advertise a full time band 6 HEIW Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor post to join our friendly team in Wales as part of the All Wales Medical Genomics Service. The successful applicant will undertake the 3 year Masters in Genomic & Genetic Counselling through Cardiff University part-time, around working for the AWMGS from the Wrexham base, in North Wales.
Earn a competitive salary and gain a Master’s degree through a 3 year, full-time, fully funded, blended training programme.
Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on a 3 year fixed term contract.
The Clinical and Laboratory services merged to form the AWMGS in April 2019, together they provide the medical genomics service to the population of Wales. The AWMGS has hubs across Wales with Specialist Medical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors providing genetic services in all the main hospitals throughout Wales. Together with Cardiff University, Wales Gene Park and the Welsh Government, the AWMGS are working to deliver the Welsh Government Genomics for Precision Medicine Strategy for patients within Wales. This is a highly exciting and innovative strategy with opportunities for staff, healthcare professionals, patients and the public across Wales.
As well as attending Cardiff University for block teaching sessions and undertaking distance learning as part of their MSc degree, the successful applicant will also have work-based learning and training where they will develop and apply their knowledge and skills in the NHS workplace. This will involve seeing patients covering all areas of genetics such as cancer, general, cardiac and prenatal and taking on other aspects of the genetic counselling role, such as teaching, audit and service development work. They may be required to cover work for all areas of Wales depending on service needs and to rotate through other areas within the service, which will involve secondments at other locations. On completion of the fixed term appointment, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent. For individuals with aptitude and commitment there are opportunities to progress through the career pathway of a Genetic Counsellor.
- Please note, completion of this fixed term post and completion of the programme and MSc will not mean you are a registered genetic counsellor. It is anticipated that a further period of clinical experience and subsequent submission of a portfolio which meets all the relevant standards will be required in order to achieve registration.*
The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

North Wales, where the post is based, is a popular tourist destination with beautiful beaches and mountains, but in close proximity to larger towns and cities such as Chester, Manchester and Liverpool. Although the Wrexham hub is small, there is close working with the other hubs in Wales and plenty of opportunities to be involved in all the goings on of the larger AWMGS through virtual meetings and working groups.
