Flexible Working: Due to the nature of the role, you’ll be required to work full time hours from the office five days per week. However, we do offer compressed hours with flexibility around start and finish times. Full time hours are up to 37 hours, depending on location.

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carry out investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, including MI6 and GCHQ to disrupt these threats. Through our protective security arm, we provide advice and guidance to government, businesses and other organisations about how to keep themselves safe. Job description

Join us as a Trainee Finance Officer to take the first steps in your career, embarking on a structured learning pathway to become a valued finance professional. Over three years, you’ll achieve a recognised Finance qualification while contributing to the Finance functions of MI5. Your work will play a crucial role in delivering our organisational strategies and ensuring that public money is spent efficiently and effectively.

During the scheme you’ll receive substantial support in achieving your Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) levels 2-4, while also rotating through various exciting roles within the Finance Function.

Success in your AAT exams and meeting your performance goals could allow you to progress in both grade and salary each year. Potential pay increases are as follows: Year 1 – £27,780 /£30,719, Year 2 – £31,793/£34,301, and Year 3 – £36,534/£39,152 (salaries are subject to an annual pay review).

Progression in grade is subject to passing internal assessment.

You won’t be alone on this journey. You’ll join a cohort of other trainees, forming a supportive network. You’ll have opportunities to travel around our UK offices to collaborate with teams and build relationships with fellow Trainee Finance Officers.

In addition to your studies, you’ll gain hands-on experience in financial monthly and year-end processes, processing payments and employee claims, resolving queries, and reviewing accounting documents. You’ll also produce routine reports and summaries for management teams. This practical experience will help you develop your analytical skills and become a valuable part of our team.

Once you’ve completed your qualification, we’ll support you in taking the next steps in your career. You’ll have opportunities for promotion and the option to become a Chartered Accountant. With plenty of training and further development opportunities available, this role offers a pathway to a long-term and exciting career in finance.

You’ll already have GCSEs in English and maths at A-C/9-4 (or equivalent), and some experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Selection process details

Our recruitment process is fair, transparent, and based on merit. Here is a brief overview of each stage, in order:

  • Eligibility Questions & Initial Form – You’ll answer a number of questions based on the requirements for the role. To complete an initial registration form, you’ll first need create a personal account. This will mean providing your full name, email address and memorable password. You can then complete the registration form, providing contact details and equal opportunities monitoring information. If you’d rather not supply these details, there is a ‘prefer not to say’ option for each question.
  • Full Application Form - once our eligibility questions are complete, we’ll invite you to complete an online application form.
  • Online Interview – If successful at application form stage, we may invite you to an Online Interview. This interview will dive deeper into your skills and motivation, so we can make sure the role’s right for you.
  • Security Interview - This interview explores your life and experiences; it’s not about your competencies or capabilities. It will take place in central London or the west of England and is an important part of the selection process.

Please note, you must successfully pass each stage of the process in order to progress to the next. Your application may take around 6 - 9 months to process including vetting, so we advise you continue any current employment until you have received your final job offer.
