About the role
We have an exciting opportunity for a Photography Assistant to join the team responsible for our digitisation programme. Our digitisation programme aims to increase access to, conservation of, and engagement with our collection. You’ll work across all four of our stunning galleries based in the heart of Edinburgh, assisting in the imaging and processing of our permanent collection.
You’ll work as part of a small team in which mutual respect and excellent communication are essential. With knowledge and experience of medium format digital camera imaging, you will support the 2D and 3D photography processing of the collection to the highest of standards.

As the Photography Assistant you will have the opportunity to work with teams across the organisation on multiple projects. Therefore, strong teamwork skills are essential as are effective time management skills.
The difference you’ll make
Reporting to the Head of Collection Information and Digital Asset Management your responsibilities will include:
- Creating preservation-friendly high-end digital imaging of our 2D and 3D collections.
- Ensuring the quality of digital images by application of agreed standards and taking part in quality reviews of the digitisation process.
- Ensuring the upload of images and related archival metadata on the Galleries’ Digital Asset Management System (DAMS).
- Responsibility for the imaging station and working with artworks and art handling.
- Keeping track of and responding to photography requests.
- Working as an integral member of the digitisation team.
- Producing commercial product photography for our online shop every month.
- Monthly support of our Conservation colleagues by documenting their work in the Conservation studios.
- Supporting any exhibition, event, staff, advertising or commercial photography needs.
Who we are looking for
To succeed in this role, you’ll need the following range of knowledge, skills, and experience:
- Knowledge and experience of digital photography copy work, particularly medium format digital cameras, and 2D photography.
- An ability to apply and review quality control protocols to the digitisation process, to agreed standards.
- The ability to process files using industry standard photo imaging software.
- Knowledge of metadata creation and an understanding and experience of cataloguing, image databases, and data retrieval.
- Excellent team-working skills, including the ability to collaborate with different teams across the organisation.
- Effective time management skills with the ability to work well under pressure and to tight deadlines.
- Ability to work accurately with attention to detail.
It would also be great if you have:
- A formal qualification in Photography or equivalent professional experience.
- Experience of art handling or working with fragile collections or items.
