Our client, a distinguished nonprofit organization, is seeking an experienced Controller to lead their financial team and oversee all financial operations. This pivotal role requires a CPA designation and a strong background in nonprofit and operational finance. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Controller collaborates closely with the executive team on strategic financial initiatives while managing the organization’s core accounting and financial reporting functions.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Leadership: Direct and oversee the daily operations of the accounting team, including general ledger maintenance, accounts payable and receivable, payroll, and other financial functions, ensuring accuracy and compliance with organizational standards.
- Strategic Financial Management: Partner with the CEO to drive financial strategies, providing insights and recommendations to support the organization's long-term objectives.
- Financial Reporting & Compliance: Manage the preparation and review of journal entries, payroll, accounts payable/receivable, and statutory reporting. Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Audit & Tax Coordination: Lead the coordination of year-end audits, preparing comprehensive year-end financial statements and supporting external auditors. Oversee the preparation and submission of corporate and personal income tax returns, as well as provincial and federal government remittances (GST/PST).
- Policy & Process Development: Maintain the integrity of financial systems, creating and enforcing documented policies, procedures, and accounting controls to ensure efficient daily operations.
- Budget Management & Analysis: Monitor financial performance against budgetary goals, analyze variances, and implement corrective actions as necessary to ensure the organization meets its financial targets.
- Team Development: Manage, coach, and mentor the accounting staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development.
Requirements
Qualifications:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in business, Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Professional Certification: CPA designation or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education.
- Experience: A minimum of 5 years of experience in a financial management role, preferably within a nonprofit organization.
Skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities.
- Strong analytical and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with ERP/accounting software and advanced Microsoft Office Suite skills (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Ability to work collaboratively with senior management and ask critical questions to ensure data accuracy and strategic alignment.
Personal Attributes: Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of exercising sound business judgment.
