Grant Writer

Summary:

The Grant Writer will coordinate with Alaska Sealife Center staff to identify, define, and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities and lead grant proposal development, writing, and submission to federal, state, and private funding agencies. The position is also responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting data on the performance of program activities. Science journalism and communication skills are vital for this position. A master's in science writing or an equivalent combination of education and experience is sought. Our ideal candidate understands the science field well and has excellent research and writing skills. This role requires a motivated self-starter who can work collaboratively and independently with purpose and accuracy, meet deadlines, and understand and express the Alaska Sealife Center mission.
This role is open to Alaska residents only. There is a remote work option within the State of Alaska. Non-Alaskans may apply subject to an agreement to self-establish Alaska residency by the position start date.

Education/Training Requirements:

Bachelor's or master's degree in professional writing or related field with three to five years of experience as a successful grant writer. Experience with grant budget development and management. The applicant should have a demonstrated record of securing science field grants and knowledge of the federal grant application process or similar expertise.

Essential Duties:

1. Researches and identifies new government, corporate, foundation, and private funding prospects to match organization priorities.
2. Generates high-quality proposals, narratives, applications, and supporting documents in response to solicitations and the requirements and guidelines of the funding agencies.
3. Promotes Alaska Sealife Center's mission through timely submission of well-researched, well written, well-documented grant proposals.
4. Collaborates with appropriate personnel to research, develop, write, and submit letters of inquiry, concept papers, and grant proposals.
5. Coordinates and follows up on the progress of submitted proposals.
6. Coordinates with stakeholders to create expenditure and income budgets utilizing accounting, budgeting, and financial analysis skills.
7. Remains up-to-date on current issues relative to grant proposals.
8. Meets regularly with staff to discuss current and new funding needs.
9. Prepares and provides progress reports to management.
10. Fosters good relations with visitors, volunteers, community leaders, contractors, fiscal agent clients, and fellow staff members by promoting a positive attitude, goodwill, and cooperation and providing high service standards.
11. Complies with all Alaska Sealife Center policies, procedures, and programs.
12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Must possess stellar organizational and analytical skills to evaluate and synthesize complex scientific data. Must be detail-oriented and big-picture-focused, with mature oral and written communication skills. Must be able to work with diverse individuals, effectively communicate scientific information to laypersons, work independently, set own priorities, manage competing deadlines, and interact effectively with staff, senior management, funders, and sub-awardees. Must consistently produce high-quality work, require minimal supervision, and have experience with the Microsoft Office Suite.
