Summary: Responsible for the overall planning, management, and completion of projects related to maintenance of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) Cancer Staging System.  Manages the activities of the editorial committee, expert panels, and more than 400 volunteers involved in the authoring and promotion of the AJCC Cancer Staging System on an ongoing basis. Works with program manager, technical specialists, technical developers, AJCC leadership, other external organizations, and volunteer subject matter experts to develop project scope and detailed project plan. Uses project management skills to manage project roles, identify resource requirements, recognize training needs, define project deliverables, provide reporting structures, and ensure the quality of the AJCC Cancer Staging System products. Ensures effective communication between the editorial committee, expert panels, AJCC executive committee, and internal project team members. Responsible for preparing presentations and reports to internal and external groups on project status.

This exempt position will report to the Senior Manager, AJCC in the Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care. It is based in our Chicago office and is a hybrid role: 3 days per week in the office/2 days per week remote.

The anticipated salary range for this position is $101,200 - $115,000 (commensurate with related experience).

Responsibilities:

  • Creates a detailed project plan which identifies and sequences the activities needed to successfully complete the updating of individual disease sites in the Cancer Staging System. Utilizes appropriate project management tools to document projects in detail, develop monthly dashboard reports for AJCC leadership, and provide insights into any developing challenges with the project timeline. Manages the execution of the work by volunteer expert panel members according to the project plan. Assigns, schedules, trains, reviews, and monitors project work to ensure that progress is within expected guidelines and is completed on time and within budget. Identifies, tracks, monitors, and communicates project-related issues, scope changes, and variances and contingencies that may arise during the implementation of updating the Cancer Staging System.

  • Manages and coordinates all meetings, web conferences, and activity for project team, editorial committee, and volunteer expert panels on an ongoing basis. Develops on-boarding and orientation training for all volunteer authors and editorial committee members.

  • Prepares and presents oral and/or written reports and project presentations to ACS, Cancer Programs, AJCC leadership, and external agencies contributing to and/or being impacted by changes in cancer staging.  Maintains effective communication among project team, editorial committee, expert panels, and vendors.

Required Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university is required.

  • PMP certification is strongly preferred.
  • At least 4-7 years of professional experience required, including experience managing projects and/or overseeing the work of and collaborating with volunteers.

  • Healthcare experience is a plus.

  • Experience with project management tools such as Monday.com, Microsoft Project, or similar products is required; Microsoft Visio experience is a plus.   

  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, is required.
