Job Summary

The Shipfitter position involves performing layout fabrication, assembly, installation, operation, modification, and testing of experimental components, materials, apparatus, and equipment at an advanced level. A shipfitter requires a comprehensive understanding of shipboard and industrial work practices, particularly in military environments.

Responsibilities

• Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools.
• Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes.
• Tack-weld fitted parts together.
• Lay out and examine metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met.
• Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers.
• Locate and mark workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications.
• Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting.

• You may be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Work may be performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You may be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position may require exposure to high noise levels.
• This position may be subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or the equivalent (for example, GED)
• Minimum two years of on-the-job experience, demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology and different metals required
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings.
• Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customers and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
• Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
• Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
• Clean background with the ability to receive clearance to work in shipyards.
• Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds in a physical environment.
• Ability to make repetitive movements.
• Must be very safety conscious and dedicated to doing a good job.
• Excellent hand-eye coordination
• Good level of physical fitness
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Physically able to perform the essential functions of the job without accommodation.
• Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE ? Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses W/Tinted Lenses, Hardhat, Respirator, Hearing Protection).
• Ability to lift and/or carry equipment/objects greater than 50lbs.
• Familiar with typical environment found in the shipyard and ship repair industry.
• Need to be proficient in using gas cutting and heating equipment.
• Must be able to read blueprints and templates.
