Position Description
This position announcement will be used to fill the Full-Time, Regular, Safety-Sensitive position of Automotive Maintenance Supervisor within the Department of Central Services, Fleet Administration Division.
This is skilled supervisory work in the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel powered automotive and related equipment.
NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK
Work involves supervision of skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled mechanics in the repair and maintenance of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment, as well as other related County equipment. Duties require assigning repair requests and personally performing or advising on various difficult repair tasks such as diagnosing complex equipment malfunctions. Work is performed with latitude for independent judgment and action, and is reviewed by a superior through conferences.'[
Examples of Duties and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Assigns and supervises the work of mechanics and other skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled personnel engaged in the major overhaul and repair of automobiles, trucks, tractors, graders, fire trucks, and related equipment; makes initial inspection in difficult cases and diagnoses trouble; inspects work in progress and upon completion.
Supervises maintenance of repair equipment; inspects tools and equipment for condition and proper use; oversees and requisitions needed parts and supplies; personally participates in the more difficult skilled mechanical work.
Directs the modification and design of equipment; recommends the repair or disposal of malfunctioning equipment; provides technical assistance and advice to subordinates on difficult or unusual problems.
Recommends subordinate staff for training; serves as automotive maintenance manager in his absence.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools, and equipment of the automotive mechanic trade.
Thorough knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of special emergency, public works, utility heavy and light heavy duty equipment.
Thorough knowledge of sound practices in staff training and supervision and of the hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of internal combustion engines.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment of the automotive, mechanical, painting, and body repair trades.
Ability to work from equipment manuals, blueprints, pencil layouts, broken parts, and written and oral instructions.
Ability to layout ant supervise the work of skilled mechanics and other workers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morals.
Ability to diagnose defects in a wide variety of automotive maintenance and construction equipment.
Ability to perform quality control inspections through visual and operational tests.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school or vocational school; four (4) or more years of experience as a journeyman automotive mechanic, including six (6) or more months of supervisory experience; and a valid commercial Class A motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction.
NOTE: Candidates that do possess a valid commercial Class A motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction must obtain a valid commercial Class A motor vehicle operator's license without air brake restriction within six (6) months of selection.
NOTE: This is a safety-sensitive position and employees in this position are subject to random Controlled Dangerous Substance (CDS) and alcohol testing.
NOTE: This position may require work hours from 3:30 pm - 12:00 am
Supplemental Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who possess the following:
1. ASE Service Consultant Certification
2. Experience utilizing a Fleet Maintenance/Management vehicle maintenance system
3. Repair of automotive, medium/heavy truck, and First Responder equipment
4. Demonstrated customer service experience
