Job Description
Responsible for the supervision and direction of the Controls Engineering Group. Resonsible for the controls design, regulatory compliance, and operational troubleshooting for Avista’s generation assets. Coordinates work with other engineering sections and with various operating, maintenance, and construction departments, regulatory agencies, power supply, and other departments. Responsible for the development, preparation, publishing and maintaining Company generation control standards. Responsible for furnishing technical design expertise for operations, maintenance and emergencies as required for generating stations.
Principal Accountabilities
- Responsible for overall employee performance, productivity and development. Manages recruiting, hiring, and retention of employees including continuous education and training, leadership development, and evaluation for coaching and guidance for employees to achieve their career goals.
- Works with other Engineering Managers and/or other business unit managers to prioritize projects and tasks to determine work assignments for their group; to set design and construction schedules utilizing staffing and material availability; to develop department operations, maintenance, and design philosophies, practices, and standards. Also includes developing construction methodologies, material usage and equipment selection.
- Primary contact for control systems and issues associated with generating facilities to report operational, maintenance, and safety problems and issues. Responsible to assure that these items are addressed in a timely and practical manner.
- Assists in the development of and implements department operations, maintenance, and design philosophies. Ensures that all Company design and maintenance practices relating generation follow applicable regulatory requirements, codes and standards.
- Reviews and signs construction drawings, specifications, evaluations, requisitions, and vendor selection. Reviews scheduling, design, and construction problems on a planned, periodic basis, as well as actual costs versus budgeted costs and adjusts work planning as needed.
- Retains and administers consultants, contract engineers, or other technical help where necessary to augment existing staff, perform specialized technical tasks, or maintain capital construction schedules.
- Attends, or assigns a representative to attend, internal and/or external meetings defining construction schedules, operating philosophies, design philosophies, design parameters, emergency procedures, and other design problems.
- Participates in the development of 1-year, 5-year, and 10-year capital and maintenance budget requirements for generating facilities. Prepares yearly O&M and non-construction capital budgets for their respective Group. Manages department variance and expected spend reports. Verifies accuracy of expense accounts, time records and other documents.
Requirements
Requires a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, preference for Electrical Engineering degree
5 years directly related work experience
Professional Engineering license in Washington or Idaho
Leadership experience preferred
Effective and flexible written and verbal communication and presentation skills required
- Effective interpersonal and organization skills required
Hybrid work options are available for this role. The successful candidate will be required to work at our Spokane, Washington headquarters at least 3 days per week including Mondays and Tuesdays with an additional day determined by the employee and manager.
