Deputy Director

Position Summary: The Deputy Director serves as a key leader of Abused Women's Aid In Crisis and assists the Executive Director with the overall management and daily operations of the organization in a manner that supports the mission, vision, and values. In partnership with the Executive Director, the Deputy Director oversees the Agency's grant administrative process and assists in revenue planning and development through a comprehensive grantmaking strategy. The Deputy Director is expected to work collaboratively with all members of the executive team to ensure the safe, efficient and sustainable operations of the organization while identifying growth opportunities and implementing data-driven programming supported by research and best practices. The Deputy Director has direct oversight of the management team overseeing direct service provision for all programs. The Deputy Director is a key driver in ensuring the Agency's key performance indicators informs the overall strategic direction of the organization, including grantmaking, strategic planning, and program evaluation and design. The Deputy Director assumes full agency authority and responsibility in the absence of the Executive Director.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Public Health, Social Work, Psychology, Public Administration, or similar field. Experience can substitute for post-secondary experience on a year-for-year basis.
  • Possession of a current State of Alaska Driving License and maintenance of a clean driving record.
  • Ability to clear and maintain stringent federal, state and local background clearances.

Minimum Experience

  • Seven years of progressively responsible senior administrative and management experience in a non-profit or public sector social services program. Residential program experience is preferred.
  • Proficient use of computers and standard office equipment, excellent written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work under pressure, and the ability to prioritize workload to meet deadlines is required

Essential Functions


Organizational Leadership, Strategic Management and Policy Development

  • Work collaboratively with all members of the leadership team and key stakeholders both in and outside of the organization.
  • Provide leadership during the annual strategic planning/budget process.
  • Provide direction, oversight and management of policies, procedures and protocols to properly execute Agency activities and requirements.
  • Make recommendations for appropriate organization structure and design for efficient and effective operations and oversee the operational management accordingly.
  • Consistently evaluate their program's success or otherwise and identify and/or execute corrective measures accordingly.
  • Provide leadership to all agency teams, facilitate collaboration and resource optimization, and provide support to ensure projects are being managed within the Theory of Change framework and timelines.

Program Strategy, Oversight and Management

  • Provide vision for growth and development of all AWAIC programs, in alignment with AWAIC's mission and vision.
  • Identify and implement new program models, demonstration/pilot projects, funding sources and partnerships that support the mission.
  • Direct and manage all program and service activities including but not limited to emergency shelter services, transitional living and rapid rehousing services.
  • Provide weekly supervision of all direct reports for ongoing training, coaching, professional development, to ensure program oversight and program development.
  • Implement programming consistent with AWAIC's trauma informed approaches and voluntary service model.
  • Oversee current service partnerships and form new partnerships that improve service outcomes by bringing on partners to deliver services outside the core mission or expertise of AWAIC.

Grant Management

  • Oversee and manage the full lifecycle of grant reporting, including timely submission of progress and financial reports, ensuring alignment with grantor requirements and deadlines.
  • Monitor and track grant expenditures, ensuring that all expenses are in compliance with budgetary restrictions, internal policies, and grant guidelines, and coordinating necessary adjustments as required.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations, conducting regular audits, maintaining accurate documentation, and liaising with stakeholders to ensure all grant activities adhere to applicable laws and funding terms.

Funding Development and Management

  • Secure diverse funding streams and leverage new partnerships by leading strategic projects and ensuring the necessary framework is in place to demonstrate positive outcomes.
  • Help build new strategic partnerships to increase revenue and garner additional support to help sustain the Agency and its strategic initiatives.
  • Provide oversight and direction for identifying and securing funding from foundations, state, federal, and local grant(s) sources to support the Agency's initiatives.
  • Provide guidance and leadership across the organization to ensure projects are being

managed within the appropriate framework and timelines.

  • Oversee, manage and/or participate in the development of funding proposals for departmental and/or organizational projects and initiatives
  • Assist with the development and management of the operating budget.
  • Manage requisition and approval of all expenses within their areas of responsibility.

Talent Management

  • Directly manages assigned staff.
  • Directly manage the recruitment, management and retention of committed and quality workforce for their programs.
  • Model the organization's values and provide effective motivation, encouragement and accountability for staff.

Advocacy and Communication

  • Represent the organization in the community and nationwide in accord with the highest standards of integrity.
  • Participate in the organization's advocacy efforts with legislators at the local, state and national levels as assigned.
  • Act as an advocate for the Agency's beneficiaries and stakeholders. This might include serving on task forces and committees at either local, state or national levels.
  • Participate in community relations activities including networking with state and local programs/agencies to foster collaborative working relationships.

Board Management

  • Attend and present at AWAIC Board meetings as assigned.
  • Assist in execution of orders and resolutions of the Board.
  • Interface with the Board of Directors through various committees and task forces.

Quality Improvement

  • Analyze trends and practices of similar organizations at local and national levels and identify and propose strategies for improvement within the organization.
  • Working with the executive and management teams, consistently monitor data, feedback, productivity or other key performance indicators to evaluate their programs, the Agency, and operational issues for quality improvement purposes.
  • Coordinate/oversee internal databases and systems to review trends or problem areas and report as per regulatory and grant guidelines and expectations.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure general health and safety policies and procedures of the organization are trained and adhered to.
  • Provide programs that ensure a safe workplace including safety orientations, skill training, emergency preparedness, blood borne pathogens and hazardous material disposal procedures, and the use of protective equipment.
  • Provide oversight and direction of organization's risk management activities and regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure the Agency is in compliance with local, state and federal authorities and regulations for assigned responsibility scopes and ensure timely reporting of such.

Data Management and Quality Assurance

  • Oversee data management to ensure the necessary tools are being utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of the Agency's work and associated outcomes. Assist in maximizing the utility of participant databases to collect, analyze, and report outcome data with the goal of increasing public and private investment.
  • Work to ensure that the data infrastructure being built is solving relevant Agency problems and supporting the Agency's grant reporting requirements.
