Position Summary:

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager will play a critical role in ensuring a safe and compliant work environment within a contract manufacturing setting specializing in personal care, Over-the-Counter (OTC) products, and consumer health products. The EHS Manager will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing environmental, health, and safety programs that align with industry regulations and standards, including OSHA, EPA, and FDA guidelines. This role requires expertise in hazard analysis, safety management systems, and regulatory compliance specific to the manufacturing of personal care and pharmaceutical products.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive EHS programs, policies, and procedures tailored to the unique needs of a personal care and OTC contract manufacturing environment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA, EPA, FDA, and industry standards (21 CFR Part 210/211 for pharmaceuticals).
  • Conduct safety risk assessments, Job Safety Analysis (JSA), and environmental impact assessments to identify hazards and potential risks associated with chemical handling, batch production, and packaging operations.
  • Oversee and maintain safety management systems such as Hazard Communication (HAZCOM), Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) programs, and Emergency Response Plans. Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for internal and external use.
  • Lead and document incident investigations, including root cause analysis and development of corrective and preventive action (CAPA) plans to address near misses, injuries, or environmental releases.
  • Develop and deliver EHS training programs specific to GMP not necessary to state specific to GMP in my opinion, safe chemical handling, spill response, and waste management for production and laboratory staff.
  • Ensure environmental compliance, including hazardous waste management, air and water permitting, and pollution prevention in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Operations, Quality, and R&D, to incorporate EHS considerations into new product development, scale-up, and process optimization.
  • Manage safety and environmental documentation, including OSHA logs, incident reports, safety data sheets (SDS), and environmental monitoring records.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with EHS external regulatory agencies and third-party auditors, ensuring timely submission of reports and resolution of EHS compliance issues.
  • Lead safety committees and engagement programs to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement throughout the facility.
  • Develop and monitor EHS performance metrics to drive accountability, track trends, and implement proactive safety measures.

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5 years of EHS management experience in a manufacturing environment, with a preference for experience in personal care, OTC, or pharmaceutical contract manufacturing.
  • Certifications: CSP (Certified Safety Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), or equivalent EHS certification preferred.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Strong to me a basic understanding of GMPs is sufficient understanding of FDA GMP regulations for OTC products (21 CFR Parts 210/211), as well as OSHA, EPA, and other relevant environmental standards.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in EHS management systems, risk assessment methodologies, and familiarity with GMP/GLP standards. GLP not needed in my opinion.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Ability to influence change and drive safety culture improvements across all levels of the organization.

  • Thorough knowledge of EHS regulations, industry standards, and best practices specific to personal care, OTC, and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and implement successful EHS programs and initiatives.
  • Experience in hazard assessment, ergonomics, and industrial hygiene.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to addressing safety and environmental challenges.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to handle complex compliance requirements.


Working Conditions:

  • This position requires regular presence in manufacturing and production areas, which may include exposure to chemicals, loud noises, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • May involve the need to climb ladders, lift materials, and inspect equipment or production lines in confined or elevated spaces.
