General Purpose:  The VP Business Lending is responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Business Lending functions. Creates, implements, maintains, and fulfills business lending strategies and short- and long-range goals to meet Credit Union financial objectives, and ensures compliance with Credit Union policies, regulations, and laws.  Effectively communicates on a routine basis with the appropriate Chief officer regarding the overall performance and vision of the Business Lending department.  Directly responsible for business lending strategies for the organization.  Responsible for implementing key strategies in accordance with the goals of BHFCU.

 

Essential Duties/Responsibilities: Provides leadership and manages the Business Lending Manager, Ag Lending Manager, and the Credit Administration Manager to ensure the business lending functions are being completed in a satisfactory and compliant manner.

  • Develops employees to ensure they are providing quality service and leadership to their teams and our members. Leads and participates on key department initiatives and organization projects, as appropriate.
  • Ensures loan activities are compliant with all applicable laws and regulations and comply with established Credit Union operating policies and procedures.
  • Partners with the appropriate Chief Officer and Business and Ag lenders in setting, monitoring, and meeting financial, sales, business plans, and operational goals.
  • Partners with Credit Administration team to ensure loans are appropriately underwritten, risk rated, and serviced while ensuring subsequent annual portfolio reviews are conducted in a timely manner.
  • Responsible for ensuring our products are competitive including making recommendations for interest rate and service charge changes and obtains approval from appropriate Corporate Officer(s) for changes and managing the communication with employees of the changes.
  • Oversees approval process for all business loans and establishes applicable loan risk tolerance levels.
  • Analyzes and recommends enhancements of existing business loan products and the development of new products.
  • Develops department policies; monitors policies and recommends changes and additions; obtains approval from the appropriate Chief Officer, and/or Board of Directors (BOD) for changes as appropriate; updates policies and informs employees of policy changes.
  • Collaborates with the appropriate Chief Officer and Business lenders to promote a positive team environment; carries out responsibilities in accordance with BHFCU policies and procedures, and all applicable laws.
  • Prepares, submits, and analyzes a variety of activity and operating reports.
  • Manages vendor relationships. Coordinates with vendors in developing, planning, preparing, and implementing special projects. Negotiates agreements with outside contacts.
  • Manages the collection and distribution of all required information to complete all external third-party audits and Federal examinations.
  • Responsible for managing and directing people and/or resources with fairness and consistency to meet departmental goals. Promote teamwork and encourage process improvement, while creating a positive work environment where employees feel recognized and valued. Responsible for evaluating employees, determining talents and development opportunities, and working with employees to improve performance, enhance skills, or create loyalty to the credit union. Conduct timely employee performance appraisals and coaching, and effectively resolve employee issues and performance concerns.
  • Work with managers to ensure a positive working environment that provides motivation, recognition and career opportunities for employees. Provide coaching to managers regarding effective practices to motivate and recognize employees.   Ensure an environment of respect and integrity throughout the organization.   Responsible for ensuring a positive employer-employee relationship.
  • Assist the appropriate Chief Officer with respect to recommendations for hires, terminations, promotions, transfers, performance appraisals, training and development, and inter­pretation of credit union rules and policies for department personnel.  Conduct all personnel functions in ac­cordance with applicable statutes (e.g., EEO, OSHA, Fair Labor, etc.).
  • Maintain organizational structure established by the appropriate Chief Officer.  Organize staff personnel into effective, efficient work groups.  Ensure that direct reports are granted proper authority and responsibility to carry out assigned functions.  Review work systems to reduce duplication of effort and unnecessary work.

Other Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and analyze data to arrive at valid conclusions, recommendations, and plans of action.  Prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Develop methods and procedures to improve effectiveness and efficiency of areas of responsibility. Gather the necessary information for submission of required reports and necessary forms. 
  • Authorizes purchases within established limits.
  • Partners with the appropriate chief officer and Business lenders in setting and monitoring annual lending budget.
  • Develop individual and department plans and budgets to ensure consistency with the strategic plan and overall budget.
  • Remain current on changes within the legal, regulatory, economic, competitive and technology environments that may affect the Business Lending function. Disseminate information to keep management and staff current regarding changes in laws, policies, procedures, and regulations affecting business lending and operations.

 

Job Knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of laws and regulations related to business lending and operations. 
  • The ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and to outside parties.
  • Working knowledge of organization's policies/procedures and credit union's service philosophy.
  • Working knowledge of the credit union's in-house computer system and internet.
  • Working knowledge of management techniques to enhance staff productivity and to maintain positive staff morale.

Job Qualifications (Education/Experience):

Education: Job requires a four-year college level of language, math and reasoning skills, Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, or related field preferred. 

Experience: Seven years’ experience in a related field with equal responsibilities is required. Three years of prior leadership experience required. Formal training should be supplemented with continuing education.

Occasional travel to one of BHFCU’s branch locations or attendance at community events may be required.

Physical Requirements

Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 5 lbs. Must be capable of climbing/descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must by capable of regular, reliable and timely attendance.

Working Conditions

Must be able to routinely perform work indoors in climate-controlled shared work area with moderate noise.

Mental and/or Emotional Requirements

Must be able to perform job functions with supervision and work effectively either on own or as part of a team. Must be able to read and carry out various instructions and follow oral instructions. Must be able to speak clearly and deliver information in a logical and understandable sequence. Must be able to perform basic mathematical calculations with extreme accuracy. Must be capable of dealing calmly and professionally with numerous different personalities from diverse cultures at various levels within and outside of the organization and demonstrate highest levels of customer service and discretion when dealing with the public. Must be able to perform responsibilities with composure under the stress of deadlines/requirements for extreme accuracy and quality and/or fast pace. Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on confidential matters.
