Job Summary
This is semi-skilled work involving the construction, maintenance, and service of county parks and recreational areas. An employee in this class is responsible for performing manual tasks to maintain and improve the physical structures and grounds of all county parks and recreational areas. Duties are performed under general supervision.
Major Essential Duties
- Performs grounds maintenance activities including landscaping, mowing, and litter control on athletic fields and in parks.
- Prepares park and recreational areas for the safe use of the public by performing manual maintenance tasks including cleaning buildings, facilities, maintenance and repair, capital improvements necessary for the upkeep of the county's park and recreational areas.
- Operates various types of automotive machinery and equipment including trucks, tractors, mowers, construction equipment, sprayers and specialized turf equipment.
- Performs simple plumbing, roofing repairs; basic carpentry, painting, and any other trade work in the maintenance and repair of county facilities and grounds.
- Inspects, cleans, and repairs the automotive and manual equipment used in the maintenance and improvement of park and recreational areas.
- Performs related duties as required.

- Assist with County’s snow removal

- The Laborer performs duties within the Parks Department, under the direct supervision of a Parks Superintendent and Parks Foreman.
Qualifications
Education and/or Experience
- Graduate of a standard high school, vocational school or the equivalency, supplemented by experience or training which provides the desired knowledge, skills and abilities to perform required duties in the Parks Division
Language Skills
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing
Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals
Reasoning Skills
- Define problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions
- Interpret a variety of technical and instructional information.
- Make decisions which serve the county’s best interest and follows the missions and objectives of the Parks Department
- The ability to see the “Big Picture”.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
- Valid KY driver’s license
- CDL required or obtained within 6 months of hire date
Other Knowledge and/or Skills
- Ability to perform grounds maintenance activities including landscaping, mowing, and litter control.
- Ability to prepare park and recreational areas for the safe use of the public by performing manual maintenance tasks including cleaning buildings and grounds, construction, equipment operation projects necessary for the upkeep and improvement of the county's park and recreational areas.
- Knowledge of techniques necessary to perform grounds keeping activities including mowing and ability to perform basic carpentry, painting, planting, landscaping, and repair of county facilities and litter control.
- Skill in operating various types of automotive machinery and equipment including trucks, tractors, and mowers.
- Ability to assist in the performance of plumbing related activities including the laying of pipes, the repairing of leaks, and the digging of ditches.
- Ability to inspect, clean, and repair the automotive and manual equipment used in the maintenance and improvement of park and recreational areas.
- Ability to deal firmly, tactfully, and responsively with the general public.
- Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and corresponding safety precautions necessary for the safe performance of assigned duties.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time under less than favorable weather conditions.
- Ability to work under general to limited supervision.
- Possession of or ability to obtain promptly, a Commonwealth of Kentucky motor vehicle operator's license.
- Ability to lift heavy material.
Manual Dexterity
Both gross and fine hand manipulation is required to perform essential and nonessential job functions. Parks Laborer must be able to exert heavy to moderate force to grip tools and to unload tools from truck. Gross hand manipulation is performed to grip tools for lawn care and maintenance of County parks. Fine finger dexterity may be utilized to write information on paper documenting service and repair jobs.

Comments
- Possession of or the ability to obtain promptly a Commonwealth of Kentucky motor vehicle operator’s license for type of equipment used. Must be able to operate all equipment as needed. Must be able to lift any material as needed up to 50 pounds.
- Must obtain commercial Driver’s License.
- Must be available and willing to attend training and/or seminars as provided by the County.
- Must be neat in appearance
- Must be 18 years or older
- Must maintain confidentiality when required
Hours:
- Position will work 4 – 10 hour days during the year or 5 ~ 8 hour day with the weekend being part of the scheduled work week during the months of March ~ November. Schedule is up to the discretion of the Parks Director.
