ABOUT:
Botanica, the Wichita Gardens is a botanical garden located in the Riverside neighborhood of Wichita, KS. Botanica opened in 1987 and hosts thousands of guests each year who visit for regular garden displays and major events including the annual tulip display and holiday light show. The gardens total 20 developed acres with more land to expand in the future. The organization depends heavily on support from volunteers, with whom employees and the public interact with frequently.
This is an hourly, full-time, 40 hours per week position. Benefits include health and dental insurance, paid holidays, and accrual-based paid time off. On call services will be required of this position.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
This is a supervisory manual work position that provides various facility support services including supervising and conducting general maintenance, routine cleaning, event set up, and coordinating event and facility security. Considerable independence is exercised in all phases of work and the Supervisor is expected to act proactively to ensure buildings are well-maintained. The positions reports to and receives major assignments from the Executive Director.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED
- Oversee building maintenance, commercial cleaning vendor relationship, and custodial work on all Botanica buildings and grounds
- Manage vendor relationships
- Draft and coordinate quotes and requests for proposals and bids
- Supervise and schedules a team of crew members (internal staff and commercial vendor staff)
- Supervise and perform cleaning activities such as trash removal, vacuum, mopping, dusting, etc.
- Work collaboratively with the Rental team, Botanica Events personnel for coordinating all set up requirements for internal meetings, public rentals, and special events
- Perform general security tasks such as event security, lock/unlock gates and buildings
- Coordinate security for special events and generally scheduled rounds
- Order supplies and track inventory
- Provide general customer service support to visitors
- Make minor repairs on building or equipment and coordinate major repairs
- Develop division goals and manage expenses according to operations and capital budgets
- Coordinate Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Plans
- Complete daily maintenance check lists
- Work collaboratively with City of Wichita departments for maintenance requests

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment
- Interviews and selects part-time, full-time and seasonal employees
- Ability to maintain simple records and prepare reports, if necessary
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to acquire within a reasonable period of time, knowledge of the procedures, tools, equipment and materials used in maintenance work
- Reports major systems maintenance to the Executive Director or related department head
- Ability to work extended and/or irregular hours including nights, weekends and holidays, as needed
- Ability to work outdoors when inclement weather conditions exist
- Ability to safely operate golf carts and maintenance vehicles
- Ability to tolerate airborne nuisances associated with open grounds and windy conditions
- Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to be continuously performing tasks that require one to push, pull, climb (ladders and in and out of vehicular equipment), bend, twist, reach, stand, and walk about (up to a half mile at a time) for most of an eight-hour shift
- Ability to communicate effectively
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
· A high school diploma or equivalent
· Supervisory and custodial experience
· An equivalent combination of education, experience, and training may be considered
- Considerable knowledge of the use and care of tools and equipment needed to perform various building maintenance and repair tasks
· Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a four-year college with a degree
- 2 years of experience in building maintenance and repair, or project management, including supervisory experience
- Ability to obtain Project Management Professional credentials, or journeyman or master trade certificate are preferred
- Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions
- Previous experience in a museum, zoo, and not-for-profit sector is a plus
- Familiarity with basic life safety regulations preferred.
