What are the responsibilities and job description for the Power Plant Technician position at Brattleboro Retreat?
Job Summary : Operates, maintains, tests, monitors, adjusts and documents the energy generation and distribution system in and connect to the Power Plant, in a safe, reliable and efficient manner providing electricity, steam and hot water to the hospital complex for environmental and process needs. Security duties, as needed, including maintenance and cleaning of Brattleboro Retreat vehicles, snow removal and assist in testing fire alarm system.
QUALIFICATIONS :
1. High school diploma or equivalent, or four years approved on-the-job training.
2. Must hold, or be eligible for and acquire, a fourth class engineer license in accordance with N.I.U.L.P.E.
qualifications.
3. Must possess a current driver's license and have maintained a safe and clean driving record for past three years.
4. Must be flexible to cover different shifts as required to maintain 24 hours / seven days a week coverage in Power Plant and Security division, as necessary.
5. Ability to enter boiler and other pressure vessel manholes preferred.
6. Must be able to work rotating weekend.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Core Competencies
Operates, maintains, monitors, adjusts and documents all power plant equipment & systems in accordance to manufacturer's recommendations, Brattleboro Retreat requirements and all State, Federal, and local regulations.
Performs assigned preventative maintenance duties to ensure efficient, reliable operation of the physical plant. Performs annual maintenance on boilers, chillers and auxiliaries.
Repairs power plant structure, equipment & systems as required.
Maintains an understanding of emergency job procedures, backup systems and assists with the maintenance of the documentation for each procedure.
Provides Security coverage when needed securing building envelope including : securing doors, maintaining vehicles, establishing radio contact with switchboard staff and responding to security requests as manpower allows.
Generates material list and recommends or requests purchase of supplies for small projects. Maintains proper inventory level of supplies and orders replacement items as necessary based upon supply and demand.
Performs minor maintenance and preventative maintenance work on buildings. Assists with snow and ice control.
Inspects and maintains that all tools are in good clean working condition and returns to appropriate storage location upon completion of job or end of shift. Ensures all tools are safe to use. Reports damaged, lost or broken tools.
Maintains a safe work environment through knowledge of body mechanics, personal protective equipment, MSDS, environment hazards and emergency job procedures. Documents and keeps up to date all forms and records pertaining to JCAHO. Maintains the Daily Log Sheet in a short and concise manner.
Picks up sharps and other medical waste from the Clinic and prepares it for shipping, including processing the manifest at the time of pickup and taking the manifest to the Facilities Office for record keeping.
Assists in testing of the fire alarm systems.
Assists others as requested or as necessary to promote teamwork and achieve department goals.
Checks and responds to e-mails at beginning of shift.
