Summary/Objective
The Technical Development Engineer position is responsible for supporting projects within the Technical Development department related to new product development, research & development/innovation, and technical services. This role will be fundamental in supporting both internal and external customers, to drive lower manufacturing costs, increased operating efficiencies, and greater customer satisfaction.


Essential Functions

  1. Supports internal Technical Development department efforts to meet goals to reduce manufacturing costs at the Hamilton location.
  2. Assists sales or customer service staff in supporting customer questions surrounding material selection, or performance.

3. Leads and facilitates internal technical troubleshooting efforts with the B W manufacturing teams when needed.

4. Develops standard operating procedures, establishes best manufacturing practices, and serves as the site technical expert for all printing and finishing equipment.

  1. Supports validation and developmental related trials at various external customer sites, as well as internal B W sites.
  2. Performs material testing and collects related data to facilitate B W process control efforts.
  3. Leads successful onboarding and development of new projects for existing or prospective customers.
  4. Makes material and spec recommendations for products based on their specific application method, packaging decoration selection, and core product type (food, beverage, homecare, etc.). 
  5. All other duties as assigned by management.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. 


Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands or fingers, to handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Hours of work are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 40 hours per week (1 hour lunch break per day). Occasional work outside of these hours may be required as job duties demand.


Travel
Some travel is expected for this position.


Required Education and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in printing, packaging science, or technical field.
  2. Previous experience or exposure in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Education and Experience

  1. Previous experience in a high-speed printing manufacturing environment.
  2. Technical knowledge of shrink sleeve labels, pressure sensitive labels, and flexible packaging.
  3. Experience with packaging application equipment.
