About the Central Park Conservancy:
Central Park is one of the world's most famous and beloved public spaces. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1858, the 843-acre Park was the country's first purpose-built public park and is a National Historic Landmark and a New York Scenic Landmark. The Central Park Conservancy, a private, not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1980 to rescue the Park, which had fallen into serious disrepair. Since then, the Conservancy has overseen the investment of over $1.6 billion in the restoration of the Park, which now hosts over 40 million visitors a year.
The Conservancy is one of the largest and most successful public private partnerships in New York City and is considered a major civic institution given its impact on the health and vibrancy of both the Park and the City. The Conservancy’s mission is to preserve and celebrate Central Park as a sanctuary from urban life. The City of New York has formally entrusted the care of the Park to the Conservancy which is responsible for every aspect of its care, including landscape maintenance, capital improvements, and the visitor experience. The Conservancy employs roughly 400 people and has an annual operating budget of $100 million.
The Position
Working under the general supervision of the Foreperson of Park Maintenance, the Facility Maintainer performs custodial maintenance duties in all staff and numerous public facilities in Central Park.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform routine custodial maintenance, including thorough cleaning throughout the day and regular deep cleaning, disinfecting, graffiti removal, replenishment of supplies, and monitoring and emptying interior trash in all visitor centers, public restrooms, staff locker rooms, restrooms and common areas
- Perform comprehensive floor cleaning and maintenance
- Operate various types of equipment including utility vehicle, light or medium weight trucks, and standard and specialized cleaning/disinfecting equipment
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report items that require repair
- Make sure facilities are secure
- Perform all tasks in compliance with organization/division policies, procedures and protocols
- Successful completion of assigned training courses in the science of cleaning
- Support continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices
- Notify supervisor regarding malfunctioning infrastructure or other repair needs, safety hazards, and Park patron quality of life issues
- Work cooperatively with staff throughout the organization
- Assist in preparation for special events as needed
- Demonstrate initiative and dependability
- Engage frequently and in a courteous, professional manner with members of the public
- Perform related work as assigned
- Perform snow removal and ice mitigation on park paths and facility entrances, and other hard surfaces with machines and physical labor to provide appropriate levels of access as per established organizational standards
Minimum Requirements
- A four-year high school diploma or equivalent; and
- Demonstrated work experience; and
- Valid Drivers’ License that must be maintained for duration of employment
Additional Requirements for Assignment to Facility Maintainer II
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience as described above that is equivalent to 3 years’ experience
- Demonstrated competency of essential job functions
- Experience using cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor buffer, and cleaning solutions
- CPC Internal Candidates – A satisfactory performance evaluation during each year of employment
Abilities Required
- Ability to read, understand follow and enforce safety procedures
- Ability to understand verbal instructions
- Ability and willingness to work, weekends and holidays, and occasional overtime as needed
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. and perform heavy physical labor on a daily basis
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for many hours
- Communication skills
Note: This position is in-person (not a remote role).
Salary range:
Facility Maintainer I: $43,500 - $46,000 annually commensurate with experience.
Facility Maintainer II: $44,500 - $51,000 annually commensurate with experience.
