Position Summary
The Phlebotomist/Lab Assistant of the Cherry County Hospital Laboratory is responsible for efficiently and accurately collecting blood and other samples from patients. Duties include preparing the testing room with proper tools, walking patients through the process when inserting needles and retrieving samples, and labeling samples for further analysis in the lab.

Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Obtains blood specimens and collects nonblood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing; verifies patient information and labels samples properly
- Explains blood drawing and other procedures to patients and answers any questions
- Gathers medical testing materials, including needles, sample vials, blood storage bags and test tubes
- Functions in the capacity of a phlebotomist as required, following established policies and procedures
- Answers telephones throughout the department, and transfers as appropriate
- Assists Lab with distributing reports
- Performs additional clerical/administrative tasks to assist the lab with day-to-day operations
- Monitors and maintains supply inventories following established protocols
- Follows all health and safety protocols and procedures to maintain sanitary work areas by wiping counters, centrifuges, and phones with disinfectant in order to remain in compliance with regulatory agencies
- Participates with coworkers, evaluating workflow and prioritizing responsibilities to provide effective patient care
- Participates in rotation of hours/duties and overtime as required
- Participates in continuing education when offered
- Assists with orientation of new employees, providing them with consistent information
- Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of patient privacy rights
- Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial or other sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form which may jeopardize the privacy of patients/employees
- Accesses and uses the minimum necessary patient identifiable information to perform job responsibilities and duties, and only for authorized purposes
- Ensures the confidentiality of patients’ medical, personal, and financial records is maintained
- Knowledgeable of and committed to practicing Corporate Compliance policies and procedures
- Complies with Cherry County Hospital personnel policies
- Performs other duties as assigned by Administrator or supervisor
Skills and Abilities Required
- Excellent communication skills to deal with co-workers and general public
- Possess manual dexterity and knowledge to perform venipunctures
- Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone. and in writing
- Ability to work under pressure due to multiple interruptions, staffing shortages, and/or instrumentation problems
- Must be knowledgeable of state and federal confidentiality laws, including but not limited to HIPAA, and be familiar with and follow all policies, procedures and instructions regarding the privacy and security of protected health information applicable to the position
Physical Demands and Working Conditions
- Must be able to hear, speak, and see to communicate on all levels with all hospital personnel and the general public
- Must be able to stand for 95% of the day throughout an 8 to 10-hour day
- Ability to move freely around work stations
- Must have stamina to bend, and carry weight up to 30 pounds for 30 feet
- Must perform maintenance with tools necessary and be able to work in small, close areas
- Must be mentally and physically prepared to meet all of the challenges and responsibilities of laboratory science

Requirements
Minimum Job Requirements
- Phlebotomy certification highly preferred, or completion of on-the-job training provided by Lab Manager or Staff
- CPR certification preferred
- Good communication skills
