Appointment Type: This position is a full-time, temporary exempt, Category 18 appointment. This position is seasonal and is expected complete service at the end of the camp season in October 2025. Employees serve at the will of the Appointing Officer.

Our 4,100- acre system includes 25 recreation centers, 9 swimming pools, 5 golf courses and numerous athletic facilities, including sports courts, ball diamonds, soccer fields and gymnasiums. Included in the department’s responsibilities are Golden Gate Park, Coit Tower, the Marina Yacht Harbor, the Palace of Fine Arts, and TPC Harding Park golf course.

About Camp Mather

Each summer, RPD operates Camp Mather, a rustic family campground located near Yosemite National Park, approximately 3 hours east of San Francisco. Each week, about 500 campers enjoy a week-long stay at Camp Mather; enjoying a full range of recreation activities such as a supervised swimming pool and a lake for water activities, supervised recreation programs, hiking, and evening campfire entertainment. Guests stay in cabins, and enjoy 3 delicious meals each day, served cafeteria style with a full salad bar and excellent service.

Job Description

Under supervision of the Camp Mather Manager, this position is responsible for assisting with off-season preparation including staff recruitment/hiring, facility inspections, and equipment management. This position will also oversee main office functions and support staff, and assist with implementation of camp's recreational programs and day-to-day operations during camp season using independent judgement and decision making. Essential duties include, but are not limited to:

Off-Season Responsibilities:

  • Staff Recruitment & Training:
    • Assist in recruiting and interviewing prospective staff members for the upcoming season.
    • Assists in planning and facilitating New Hire Orientation, including training on Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and the Safety Emergency Action Plan (SEAP).
  • Annual Inspections & Facility Prep:
    • Assists in coordinating yearly inspections, including fire safety, ropes course, and health department assessments.
  • Inventory & Purchasing:
    • Conduct inventory and inspect previous season's equipment to assess needs for the upcoming year.
    • Assist with planning and recommending purchases to ensure all resources and supplies are in place.
In-Season Responsibilities (High Season):

  • Staff Supervision & Program Oversight:
    • Supervise main office and support staff and assist in supervising up to 30 staff who conduct daily recreational activities and programming for camp patrons, and administrative support staff.
    • Assist in ensuring that all programs are engaging, safe, and aligned with the camp’s mission and values.
    • Oversee camp operations in the absence of the Camp Manager or the 3289 CAT 18, ensuring 24/7 coverage and effective resolution of issues.
  • Support Services:
    • Oversee the check-in of weekly camp guests
    • Supervise the daily main office operations which include: selling daily passes, assembling weekly welcome packets, taking program fee payments
    • Sending out weekly communications to campers.
    • Preparing purchasing and OT documents for Manager’s signature.
    • Supervising weekly time entry submissions, and time-off requests.
    • Providing information to campers and guests.
    • Ensure accuracy of weekly program schedules
  • Community Relations:
    • Assists in building and strengthening partnerships with local organizations and businesses to enhance camp resources and programming.
    • Act as a representative of Camp Mather within the local community, fostering positive relationships and potential collaborations.
    • Responsible for Guest Relations with Senior Camp, Randall Camp, and TOE Camp.
    • Establish, maintain and foster positive, harmonious and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City Officials, employees, supervisors, participants, coworkers, and the general public.
    • Maintain respectful, consistent and fair when dealing with community members
    • Demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity.
    • Multitask and be flexible in approaching solutions.
    • Be self-directed, show initiative and demonstrate a dedication to the position and the community.
  • Safety & Emergency Preparedness:
    • Assist in the development and implementation of contingency plans for natural disasters, including wildfires and health-related emergencies (e.g., COVID-19).
    • Assists in ensuring all emergency action plans and safety protocols are actively followed by staff to prioritize patron and staff well-being.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education: Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Requires at least five (5) years of experience in professional recreation work, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity overseeing activities in recreation.

Substitution: Additional experience in professional recreation work may substitute for the educational requirement as described above on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of four (4) years. Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter unit equal to one year.
