Definition

This is highly skilled electronics work in the City's Traffic Engineering Division.


An employee in this class installs, services and repairs electrical and electronic devices used to maintain and control the flow of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.


Works under the supervision of a division supervisor with considerable independence in completing assignments. Work assignments are sometimes hazardous and often performed under adverse weather conditions.

Characteristic Work

Installs, troubleshoots and maintains traffic control devices such as solid state traffic controllers, malfunction management units, conflict monitor units, digital and analog cameras, Ethernet switches, video servers, and fiber optic switches and connectors. Programs, troubleshoots, and maintains school flasher systems. Uses tools and equipment such as oscilloscopes, clamp-on ammeters, multi-meters, and various power tools to install, service and repair microprocessor minicomputers and pedestrian and vehicular traffic control equipment. Uses tools such as an optical time-domain reflectometer and fusion splicer to install, repair and test fiber optic cable. Uses various electronic devices such as video monitors, tablet and laptop computers to troubleshoot and program various traffic control devices. Makes precision measurements to diagnose malfunctions. Reviews various technical manuals, diagrams and schematics. May modify design circuitry to meet requirements for non-standard intersections. Operates a bucket truck to perform work at heights up to 40 feet replacing bulbs and terminal strips and performing other electrical and electronic repair. Performs preventative maintenance checks at signalized intersections including cleaning lenses, reflectors, refractors and signal control cabinets. Tests push button stations for proper intersection operation. Tests traffic control equipment to identify defects in electronic equipment according to system schematics. Responds to emergency calls to repair electronic equipment in order to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow. Maintains log of location, date, malfunction and nature of repair to equipment. Provides technical guidance to lower level technicians. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school, trade school, or GED and a minimum of one year of paid experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of modern electronic traffic controls and devices. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license. PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS SHALL BE LIMITED TO PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE OF THE CITY OF AKRON WHOSE EXPERIENCE IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE MEETS THE QUALIFICATIONS.


Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, procedures, equipment, materials, hazards and safety precautions involved in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical traffic systems. Considerable knowledge of the principles of electronics as related to solid state logic circuitry and computer controlled circuitry.


Ability to design circuitry for special controller applications. Ability to work with time space graphs and set up progression patterns for non-interconnected controllers. Ability to trace troubles and defects in traffic control systems and to take necessary action to make corrections or repairs. Ability to read and interpret complex diagrams, plans and specifications. Sufficient physical stamina to work under adverse weather conditions. List of essential job functions available upon request.

Competitive Examination Process

This is a classified position.

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for seniority. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for seniority. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 90%, Seniority 10%. PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS SHALL BE LIMITED TO PERMANENT EMPLOYEES IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE OF THE CITY OF AKRON WHOSE EXPERIENCE IN THE CLASSIFIED SERVICE MEETS THE QUALIFICATIONS.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and appointment.

Since this examination is posted on a combined basis, two separate eligibility lists will be generated with promotional candidates considered before open candidates.

NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 90% for qualifying and 10% for seniority.
