General Summary
Under the general supervision of the Library & Community Services Manager, the Adult Basic Education (ABE) Coordinator will oversee the Adult Basic Education program’s operations. The Coordinator will manage all facets of the ABE program: structure and growth, day-to-day operations, funding, volunteer and student management.
This is a part-time, specially funded position with a two-year duration. Continuation of this position after this period will be determined according to effectiveness, impact, and funding.
Essential Job Functions
- Work directly with the Library & Community Services Manager, Region 6, ABE students and volunteers, Texas Workforce, BVCOG, and any future partner organizations/agencies to provide ABE classes (e.g. GED, ESL, and digital skills instruction)
- Serve and assist prospective and enrolled students with a positive and proactive attitude
- Train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of ABE volunteer staff
- Assist with community outreach to develop and grow the Adult Basic Education program
- Coordinate the development, implementation, evaluation, and supervision of ABE program goals, objectives, classes, and activities
- Keep statistics on the number of classes, programs, and participants enrolled in any of the adult basic education programs
- Teach HPWML-run ABE classes e.g. Computer Skills Clinic, as needed
- Establish and maintain class and program rosters
- Keep abreast of current information in the field of adult basic education. Attend workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences as recommended by the department head
- Research and work with the other library staff to secure grant funds for library efforts and to renew funds for this position.
- Collaborate with community partners to develop and maintain additional community lead programs (e.g. the Burleson County Jail library branch)
- Circulate materials in the Burleson County Jail library branch
- Perform other related duties as assigned; have an understanding of the most basic daily tasks of the library (e.g. circulation, issuing library cards, manning telephone and/or electronic service requests)
- Become proficient in the use of all classroom software
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Bachelor's degree required.
Experience in education and/or social work preferred.

- Ability to make independent decisions with good judgement
- Possess basic proficiency and a willingness to improve on skills including but not limited to (Microsoft 365, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook software programs)
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and ability to create a “team” environment by maintaining a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and willingness to learn
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis

Physical Demands
The work is light and includes exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally to 10 pounds of force to move objects and following physical abilities: balancing, climbing crawling, crouching, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling pushing, reaching, speaking, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
Work Environment
The work is typically performed in a dynamic, collaborative environment that requires smooth adaptation and flexibility to changing goals, priorities, and needs. Some evenings and weekends are required for meetings, events, and programs. This position works on-site, with limited at home abilities available with approval only.
