What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Clerk position at City of Forest Park?
- Under general supervision, performs a variety of general office duties.
- Responsible for the care and custody of persons who are housed in the jail.
- Responsible for securing and disseminating public records.
- Maintains confidential and sensitive information.
- Regular interaction and communication with other agencies and departmental personnel required.
- Must react and respond appropriately during emergencies, critical incidents and urgent matters in a calm and deliberate manner.
- Have the ability to multi-task and prioritize.
- Prepares form letters, correspondence, requisitions, reports, citations, time cards, transcripts and other documents.
- Makes routine interpretations of ordinances, laws, rules and regulations when assisting the public; refers difficult interpretations to a supervisor.
- Routes calls to appropriate department or employee. Utilize paging system to contact division heads and supervisors as needed.
- Dispatches police units when necessary.
- Assists in coordinating officers with scene activities by providing and relaying information as necessary.
- Maintains records such as offenses, arrests, traffic citations, court docket, etc.
- Prepares reports as necessary.
- Creates/maintains manuals used by personnel.
- Receives monies, writes receipts and maintains proper records, posts to ledgers.
- Files correspondence and reports using alphabetical, numerical and subject matter code as well as by other methods.
- Composes correspondence for own or department head signature.
- Operates office equipment; i.e. computer, radio, cameras, copier, fax and calculator.
- Acts as jailer or matron when prisoners are being housed in the jail. Checks prisoners on assigned schedule; contacts patrol officers or supervisor when necessary for assistance with prisoners; schedules meals for prisoners.
- Maintains mayor’s court docket, acting as court clerk when assigned, files and submits various reports for audit.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures and equipment.
- Aptitude for computer operation.
- Ability to accurately enter information into computer software.
- Skill in communicating with the general public, sometimes under stressful conditions.
- Ability to make minor decisions in accordance with laws and regulations.
- Ability to work special shifts as necessary.
- Knowledge of arithmetic through percentages, fractions and decimals; do simple arithmetic calculations quickly and accurately.
- High school education and/or equivalent.
- Satisfactory background investigation.
