Job Summary

Under the direction of management, employee performs duties related to overseeing and managing the City’s Learn to Swim program, including a team of Swim Instructors and the Head Swim Instructor, ensuring the delivery of high-quality swim lessons to individuals of varying ages and skill levels in a safe and supportive environment. This part-time/seasonal position works approximately 35 - 40 hours per week. Evenings, weekends, and some holidays are required.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Supervises, trains, and provides guidance to the Head Swim Instructor and the team of Swim Instructors.
  2. Supervises and manages the Lifeguards on duty, maintaining safety protocols and rule enforcement.
  3. Develops comprehensive swim lesson plans and curriculum for different skill levels and age groups.
  4. Ensures the implementation of effective teaching methodologies, safety protocols, and lesson delivery techniques by Swim Instructors.
  5. Conducts regular evaluations of lesson plans, instructional methods, and student progress to maintain program quality.
  6. Coordinates schedules, allocates resources, and assigns classes to Swim Instructors efficiently.
  7. Collaborates with the Head Swim Instructor to ensure consistency in lesson delivery and adherence to program standards.
  8. Conducts training sessions, workshops, and performance evaluations for Swim Instructors.
  9. Monitors and assesses the performance of the Learn to Swim program, making recommendations for improvements.
  10. Maintains communications with students, parents/guardians, and staff regarding lesson schedules, progress, and any relevant program updates.
  11. Approves timesheets in online software system accurately and timely.
  12. Checks and monitors chemicals in the pool water to maintain proper chemistry and clarity; reports issues immediately to management.
  13. Ensures facility cleanliness, including office spaces, restrooms, deck areas, etc.
  14. Works cohesively with management to devise the strategies that will lead them to achieve the official goals established by the City of Hurst for the Aquatics Division
  15. Adheres to Hurst’s Code of Ideals and The Hurst Way. Fosters positive employee relations and employee morale on a City-wide basis.
  16. Performs related duties as directed when such duties are logical and appropriate.
  17. Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
  18. Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Substantial experience in teaching swim lessons with a comprehensive understanding of various teaching methodologies.
  • Strong leadership and managerial skills to effectively lead and mentor a team of Swim Instructors.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills to coordinate schedules, convey instructions, and interact with students, parents/guardians.
  • Ability to evaluate program effectiveness and make data-driven decisions for program enhancements.
  • Passion for promoting water safety and providing exceptional swim instruction.
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and can excel at applying the City of Hurst’s Code of Ideals in all interpersonal relations with city staff and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers. 
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time to operate standard office equipment, including computer keyboard, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, and printer.

Minimum Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

  • Minimum age 17 years.
  • Current Ellis & Associates ILTP certification, and JES Swim Instructor required or ability to obtain before June. Certification and training will be provided upon employment.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of swim lesson instruction required.
  • Additional certifications in swim coaching or advanced swimming techniques are preferred.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required. 
  • Must have regular and punctual attendance, reliable transportation, flexibility to work overtime, evenings, weekends, and some holidays, and respond to emergency situations during non-scheduled work hours.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen.

This job entails moderate physical labor, which requires strength and agility.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is required to stand; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to sit or smell.  The employee must occasionally lift, shovel, and carry up to 40 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

  • Ability to demonstrate swimming strokes and techniques proficiently.
  • Capacity to stand for extended periods and engage in physical activities in and around the pool.

Majority of work is performed outdoors and is subject to extreme heat and sun. Work performed is subject to chemical hazards.
