What are the responsibilities and job description for the ZONING CLERK position at City of North Miami?
The purpose of the position is to perform technical and administrative work for assigned zoning and planning functions of the City under the directions of the Zoning Manager. Employees in this classification serve as administrative support and initial liaison for zoning issues relative to the Community Planning and Development Department.
The Zoning Clerk position provides direct support to the Zoning Manager, the Senior Planning Technician and other community planning staff as necessary. The position will require the facilitation of the certificate of use applications intake, processing and administration of zoning applications coupled with intake and review of various petitions and other clerical duties. The position requires basic independent judgment and comprehensive knowledge of department and/or Citywide functions, practices and procedures to assist in the City's land use planning, development, zoning and related permits questions.
The Zoning Clerk enters and maintains data in City's electronic database called Eden; Operates telephone, computer, fax machine, copier and modern office equipment; Prepares correspondence, notices, fliers and other documents. The position provides guidance support for the City's businesses and ascertains their permit needs. Assist applicants with data and document research. Files records in appropriate location, helps keep office area neat and organized. Makes copies of materials, performs other duties and special projects as needed by supervisor.
Must also have at least one (1) year of customer service and clerical experience within an office environment.

- Serves as frontline staff for all zoning inquiries;
- Assists business owners with Certificate of Use (CU) application process;
- Provides customer service to walk-in customers concerning CUs, zoning and building permits;
- Intakes zoning applications for completeness;
- Provides basic zoning and land use information to professional and technical staff and the public; explains application processes, fees and requirements to the public;
- Responds to requests for zoning information on the telephone and in writing;
- Reviews applications submittals for compliance with the application's checklist;
- Fluency in oral and written English;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel;
- Excellent customer service skills;
- Ability to conduct research and summarize findings;
- Ability to collaborate with business, and other employees within the city as well as in other outside agencies;
- Ability to perform job responsibilities in a timely manner in order to meet scheduled deadlines;
- Ability to compose letters and memorandums;
- Liaison to navigate inquiries through various departments;
- Ability to concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions;
- Assists Senior Zoning Technician with Board Of Adjustment members' package preparation; and
- Assists where needed in the operations of the Community Planning and Development Department.
