The City of Sebastopol is seeking a problem-solving, inclusive, collaborative, and well-spoken professional with an understanding of engineering principles and terminology, the ability to read and interpret blueprints and schematics, strong mathematical skills for calculations and measurements, and familiarity with industry standards and safety protocols for the role of Engineering Technician II. This position is part of the Engineering Technician I-II classification series.

This position performs various tasks in the office and field, both technical and administrative, supporting the Public Works Department and the City Engineer. The Engineering Technician II will be the primary contact person providing assistance and referrals to visitors at the City’s Corporation Yard. The incumbent may be assigned duties related to compliance programs and reporting, engineering projects, and capital projects, which may include project management, development and plan review, calculating fees, issuance of permits, maintaining plan files and engineering records, field surveys, site inspections, information gathering, data analysis, performing mark and locate functions, participating in surveying activities, or other areas as needed. This is a journey-level classification that performs the full range of technical work to ensure the coordination of engineering projects, including map and plan review, updating drawings and maps, field observations, research of engineering and public capital project topics, performing basic engineering calculations, permit processing and issuance, review, processing and providing comments for development applications. The selected candidate may perform site inspections, gather information and organize data, calculate fees, perform plan checks and administrative work, staff a public counter, and support other public works and engineering programs and activities. Responsibilities in this position require the use of tact, discretion, independent judgment, and frequent interaction with the public. The Engineering Technician II receives only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and is fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate will:

  • Basic civil engineering principles, practices, and methods applicable to office and field work involving the design, construction, and maintenance of public works projects.
  • Possess a blend of technical proficiency and engineering knowledge.
  • Be skilled in technical drawing and CAD or GIS software, with a solid understanding of engineering principles and terminology.
  • Have the ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documents.
  • Possess familiarity with industry standards, codes, and safety protocols.
  • Make sound, independent decisions within established policy and procedural guidelines.
  • Graphically convey data and plot data on a variety of maps, charts, and graphs.
  • Have experience providing technical support and troubleshooting for engineering projects and proficiency in various engineering, and office software tools.
  • Possess high attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills, for collaborating with engineers and team members, alongside strong problem-solving abilities to address technical challenges efficiently.
  • Possess an Associate’s degree or higher or having completed two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering, geography, architecture, landscape design, or public administration is desired.
  • Establish positive relationships with colleagues, employees, the public, and other stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

Level II

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent and post high-school coursework, training, or experience in civil engineering, drafting, geography, plan review, construction management, or a similar area.

An Associate’s degree, or the completion of two years of college-level coursework in civil engineering, geography, architecture, landscape design, or public administration is desirable.

Experience: Two (2) years of responsible experience performing technical civil engineering support work involving the use of CAD or GIS, extensive public contact, and document processing of which one (1) year involves reading and interpreting plans, preparing permit application files for review, or other permitting activities, preferably with a public agency.

License and Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver's license. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be considered for accommodation on a case-by-case basis.

  • Payment in Lieu of Health Care Premiums: For an employee who can provide the City with proof of medical insurance and who chooses not to participate in the Citysponsored medical insurance plan, the City agrees to pay an in-lieu.
  • Employer contributes 100% Dental and Vision Benefits
  • Life Ins. - $50,000 for employee. Increased coverage may be purchased by employee.
  • Long-term and Short-term Disability Ins. - 60% of salary for employee. Benefit is non- taxable income.
  • PERS Pension Plan: 2% @ 62 for PEPRA Members (hired after 01/01/13) or 2% @ 55 for Classic Members (transferred from another agency within 6 months).
  • Deferred Compensation Plans.
  • Vacation and Sick Leave accrual benefits.
  • 15 Holidays. Funeral, Medical, Family & Personal Leave.
  • Payroll Direct Deposit.
  • Overtime Pay, Standby Pay, and Weekly Standby Pay depends on job classification.
  • Longevity Pay granted after completion of 5 years at 2%, and a 2% increment every 5 years to 25 year at 10% max.
  • $1,000.00 annual Uniform Reimbursement for Public Works personnel.
  • Mileage Allowance & Business Travel expense reimbursement.
