The City of Syracuse's Mayor's Office to Reduce Gun Violence is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Gun Violence Reduction Data Analyst.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Gun Violence Reduction Data Analyst for the Mayor's Office to Reduce Gun Violence will help the City of Syracuse leverage data, process improvement, and innovative strategies to support efforts aimed at reducing gun violence and promoting community safety. This position will play a critical role in collecting, analyzing, and reporting data to track the effectiveness of gun violence initiatives, identify trends, and inform decision-making.
The Analyst will collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, including community organizations and other City departments, to develop data-driven solutions that enhance program outcomes and ensure transparency. This role involves creating and maintaining performance metrics, conducting research, and supporting the implementation of strategies that contribute to a safer and healthier Syracuse.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
- Create and implement a formalized process for tracking and reporting of different gun violence prevention programs including the completion of defined milestones, outputs, outcomes, expenditures, and other information as necessary.
- Engage with local organizations and stakeholders to collect appropriate datasets.
- Perform data analyses, using appropriate software tools, to measure and communicate ongoing program performance.
- Assist in the design and implementation of dashboards and data visualizations that show progress toward performance goals.
- Participate in other discrete data projects for the Mayor’s Office to Reduce Gun Violence as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
- 1-3 years of experience in business analytics, data science, public policy, research, consulting, or other related fields.
- Proficiency with software programs such as Microsoft Excel, PowerBI or Tableau to develop graphical representations and data visualizations.
- Familiarity with performance management and business analytics concepts, such as cost-benefit analysis and return-on-investment.
- Ability to clean, analyze, and interpret data from disparate data sets.
- Ability to manage projects that involve multiple stakeholders, constituencies, and/or agencies.
- Experience in conducting process improvement analyses and recommending changes that save time and money.
- Experience with governmental policy evaluation.
- Ability to thoughtfully communicate with team leaders and relevant stakeholders.
ADDITIONAL COMPETENCIES/QUALIFICATIONS
- Proficiency with software programs such as Python, R, SQL, SAS, Stata, or other programming languages to analyze large datasets.
- Proficiency with geographical information systems such as ArcGIS or QGIS to analyze spatial data.
