We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Senior Equipment Mechanic working with the Department of Public Works.  The ideal candidate for this recruitment will perform a variety of duties that include performing technical inspections on corrective maintenance, services, monitoring and supporting day-to-day facility and production operations, and troubleshooting problems along with a variety of additional assignments. 

Under basic supervision, performs skilled maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on City vehicles, specialty vehicles, light and heavy equipment; works independently, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience and training.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Works independently, and makes appropriate decisions based on work experience and training; examines equipment malfunctions and troubleshoots actual and potential problems; repairs, disassembles, rebuilds, and adjusts equipment and components; fabricates and reconditions parts as needed; assures equipment functions meet job specifications and technical codes; duties may vary according to job assignment.
  • Performs skilled maintenance, repairs, adjustments, and preventive maintenance on a diverse fleet of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles, equipment, and machinery including bulldozers, refuse haulers, road-graders, front-end loaders, compressors, heavy hydraulic systems, boom trucks, golf cars, fire equipment, and other specialty vehicles and equipment; assists with training and cross-training of other mechanics.
  • Inspects and diagnoses mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems on vehicles and equipment; determines extent of necessary repairs, prioritizes work, and performs repairs within scope of authority; generates innovative solutions to complex work situations.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment to maximize the effective life cycle, reduce downtime, and improve the productivity of City workers; performs specialized repair and maintenance work to bring vehicles and equipment into compliance with safety and regulatory violations.
  • Inspects status of vehicles and equipment, performs safety inspections, and recommends equipment replacement and major repair options; installs auxiliary and specialized equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicle and equipment engines and components, including gasoline, diesel, and hybrid engines; uses technical manuals and computer equipment to diagnose and correct problems.
  • Maintains records and logs of services performed and general vehicle information; opens and closes work orders; and documents work hours, parts used, and repairs completed.
  • Diagnoses and repairs vehicle component systems and sub-systems for electrical, fuel supply, hydraulic & pneumatic systems, brakes, drive train, suspension, exhaust, and engine cooling systems; performs arc and acetylene welding as required; fabricates and modifies metal parts and components; performs body repair and other metal component repairs.
  • Transports equipment from the field to the repair shop facility; performs emergency repairs in the field as required; identifies and reports vehicle problems requiring additional maintenance and repair; notifies supervisors of repair problems beyond the scope of authority and skills.
  • Maintains and cleans shop facility; disposes of chemicals in accordance with all safety regulations.
  • Adheres to safety procedures in work areas and in performance of work assignments; promotes a culture of safety.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines 

High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND four years' experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and mechanical equipment, including heavy equipment in a fleet environment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge of: 
  • City policies and procedures.
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in the repair of vehicles, specialty vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Gasoline & diesel engines, power trains, and hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical systems.
  • Federal, state and FSD safety rules and regulations, occupational hazards, and safety precautions.
  • Methods used in a preventive maintenance program for vehicles and equipment.
  • Safety rules, regulations, and occupational hazards in repair shop environments; including OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for use and storage of hazardous chemicals in the workplace.
  • Metal fabrication and welding methods and procedures.
  • County geography, traffic patterns, streets, landmarks, and facility locations.
  • Environmentally responsible and resource-efficient fleet management techniques.
Skill in:
  • Inspecting, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical problems in a wide variety of vehicles, specialty vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Working independently and using initiative within established procedural guidelines.
  • Monitoring operations and identifying maintenance and safety issues.
  • Using specialized tools and equipment to perform skilled electrical and mechanical repair work.
  • Performing computerized diagnostic tests and fine calibrations on equipment and components.
  • Identifying unsafe conditions and mechanical problems and taking corrective actions.
  • Reading and interpreting technical manuals and specifications.
  • Promoting and enforcing safe work practices and identifying safety problems.
  • Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.
  • Maintaining fleet management records and files.
  • Operating a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers and the public.
  • Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Class "A" Arizona State Commercial Driver's License is required within one (1) year of hire. Technical certifications from National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) in Medium/Heavy Truck and EVT Level 1 Certification will be required within one (1) year of hire. Must have own hand tools. Additional technical certifications may be required for some incumbents in this job class.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in repair and maintenance facilities, with moderate physical requirements, and strength sufficient to lift and move items weighing up to fifty (50) pounds; may be exposed to safety hazards and dangerous tools and equipment; requires vision capacity to perform fine calibrations and differentiate between colored wires.
