Policy Advocate
Job Summary
We are looking to fill this position with a dedicated, passionate, and mission-driven advocate who is ready to collaborate, organize, and engage with community members, partners, allies, and all who fight for the right of all people to have a healthy environment; including clean air, clean water, safe & affordable homes, access to transportation, economic opportunities, and the transition to green jobs that afford family-sustaining wages.
Ideal candidates will have demonstrated experience in getting things done independently, be proactive in their work and networking, take on new challenges and responsibilities, and have the flexibility to work on quick deadlines individually and with a team. Candidates will be able to have creative problem-solving in ensuring a clean environment for all in advocacy, organizing, and civic engagement.
This position will provide opportunities for growth through training, civic engagement, networking, mentoring, and relationship-building with people from varied backgrounds, places, and experiences across the community, government, and other advocates.
Individuals should be familiar with climate change issues and local environmental health issues around the Imperial and Eastern Coachella Valleys; including issues that affect water quality, air quality, Lithium Valley, the Salton Sea, and social justice issues.
Responsibilities
Advocacy for environmental justice issues including rules, regulations, and policy changes. The focus will be on Lithium Valley issues affecting environmental health; air quality, water quality, public health, and other issues identified by the organization as a priority. Work in advocacy includes policy research, tracking alerts, preparing for public meetings and/or hearings, writing comment letters, meeting with government officials and stakeholders, and testifying at agency forums on behalf of the individual and/or Comite Civico del Valle.
In collaboration with the Communications Manager, develop messaging to grow awareness about local issues and increase the understanding of opportunities to engage with agencies tasked with solving problems affecting the region.
Coalition coordination assistance with the Executive Director and Projects Manager; participate in and collaborate a diverse coalition of advocates, community members, and labor representatives. Including relationship building and management with partner organizations, community members, officials, allies, and others to help build a better framework for the protection of environmental health.
Education in the community and other stakeholders to understand climate solutions through presentations, training, and other events.
Other tasks may be required as needed to achieve the organization’s goals in community advocacy.
Preferred Qualifications
Enthusiasm for expanding public understanding of local issues and how they can engage in solution planning.
Experience with advocacy.
Location
Our office is in Brawley, CA. This position must be based in and work out of the Imperial Valley area. Occasional travel throughout the State is required.
