What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Clinical Operations position at Copper Ridge Surgery Center?
Copper Ridge Surgery Center is an award-winning, multi-specialty Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). We are the largest ASC in Michigan and are located in beautiful Traverse City.
The Director of Clinical Operations (DCO) is responsible for all clinical operations and support services and ensures clinical departments operate safely and efficiently. The DCO communicates regularly with the Center’s Medical Director. This position works collaboratively with the Director of Clinical Quality to ensure the center meets or exceeds state, federal and regulatory standards.
Key Areas of Responsibility
Leadership
- Provides clinical and administrative leadership to Team Leaders.
- Develops, mentors and supports managers and supervisors in all clinical areas, to build a team and improve consistency across departments.
- Ensures efficient usage of staff and resources to meet patient needs, improve quality and reduce waste.
- Acts as a clinical resource to surgical services.
- Responsible for oversight of the clinical supervisory team.
- Provides feedback, performance evaluation and encourages cross training, and staff education.
- Participates in Center “On-Call” schedule.
- Attends meetings including staff meetings, Board of Managers, Quality Assurance (QAPI), ASCP (Physicians’ Advisory Group), Medical Executive Committee and Leadership Roundtable.
- Works collaboratively with CRSC Leadership.
- Adheres to a high standard of professional ethics and safety, is a role model for staff
Service Line development
- Oversees the clinical implementation of new service lines
- Evaluates and proposes enhancement of clinical services within budget guidelines and adjusts as needed
Physician relations- recruiting, retention
- Manages block scheduling and evaluation
- Communicates, builds and maintains relationships with physicians
Infection Preventionist
- Develops and oversees the Infection Preventionist to support the infection control program.
- Oversees the training and development of the Infection Control RN.
- Implements and monitors interventions that protect patients from health care associated infections (HAI) in the clinical setting.
Budget and finance
- Assists in budget planning, forecasting and implementation of department and clinical budgets.
- Ensures services operate within approved budgets, evaluates and reports variances.
- Ensures efficient utilization of clinical staff within approved budgets.
- Monitors supply costs and usage.
Works with Medical Director and staff to establish appropriate patient clinical criteria, record-keeping, confidentiality of patient information including HIPAA guidelines, processing of scheduling, identification, patient care and QA.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills including those required during stressful situations.
- Demonstrated surgical services and clinical management experience with knowledge of accepted ASPAN, SGNA, AORN, IAHCSMM, AAMI and Michigan Department of Community Health standards.
- Knowledge of industry best practices.
- Strong decision making and organization skills.

- Ability to understand and assist development of financial, statistical and quality assurance reports.
- Has a working knowledge of service line revenue and expenses.

- Proficient with Microsoft applications – Outlook, Word, Excel
Education and Experience:
- Graduate of accredited school of Nursing with current MI licensure
- BSN Required, Master's in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or Nursing preferred.
- BLS and ACLS certifications required
- 5 years in ASC or comparable setting
- 3 years of supervisory experience in a clinical setting
