Basic Purpose Of Position

The Manager, Mechanical & Custodial directs the implementation of mechanical maintenance and cleaning programs for PATCO rolling stock and the shop equipment necessary to maintain it. This is done by planning the day to day and long term maintenance, backshop and capital activities. This manager supervises and sets the maintenance/repair priorities and coordinates the work of his team.

Major Responsibilities And Duties

DESCRIPTION OF TASK

Sets shop priorities, oversees scheduling of all maintenance activities and coordinates inspections/repairs of shop mechanical support equipment.

Determines feasibility of in-house fabrication of repair/replacement parts utilized on support equipment and Transit Rail Vehicles.

Verifies accurate data is contained within the car status report and all carryover reports.

Completes daily, weekly and monthly reports.

Ensures adequate material is on-hand for completion of scheduled maintenance and truck building.

Manages the overall truck and gearbox overhaul program.

Special projects assigned by Director to address equipment performance/reliability, deficiencies, and absolute component issues.

Measures the improved performance and identification of economical substitute components.

Recommends and writes/revises SOP’s.

Measures and verifies the consistent performance and quality of work performed on the shop floor.

Develops testing/interviewing materials for new employee candidates. Also develops technical training programs for new/existing mechanical/custodial employees.

Responsible for training all new and existing employees.

Assist Director in planning annual capital/operating budget.

Documents performance issues, resolve differences among employees, counsel employees, resolve differences among employees, counsel employees, hear and respond to grievances at step “B” level.

Able to react to change in a positive manner and to handle other tasks as assigned.

Education/Training/Experience

Required:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Associate’s degree in a mechanical/technology field OR 8 years’ experience managing a rail car maintenance facility. Maintenance management experience within an industrial electromechanical complex will be considered.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual must have knowledge of mechanical drawings, material specifications, and industrial safety principles.
