Position: Mental Health Coordinator

Classification: HS 01-04 ($59,335 - $62,052 - $65,499 - $68,947)

Hours: 40 per week

Supervisor: Head Start/Early Head Start Director

Positions Supervised: Practice-Based Coach Team Supervisor

Role Overview

Through collaboration with children, families, staff, and community partners, the Head Start Mental Health Coordinator oversees and implements mental health and coaching services within the 0-5 Head Start program. The Mental Health Coordinator will provide training, guidance, and support, ensuring compliance with Head Start standards and regulations involving mental health and coaching.


Key Responsibilities

  1. Collaboration: Work closely with children, families, and staff, providing resources and referrals to mental health and coaching services as needed. Collaborate with community agencies and mental health professionals to ensure a network of support.
  2. Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for parents/guardians and staff regarding mental health and social-emotional support.
  3. Compliance: Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations regarding mental health and coaching services in early childhood education settings. Stay current with policies, research, and trends in early childhood mental health and coaching.
  4. Intervention: Develop and implement intervention strategies, including individual and group support as needed.
  5. Monitoring: Conduct regular observations of the social-emotional atmosphere, including in the classroom and children’s homes, and make recommendations based on sound data and best practices.
  6. Program Development: Develop and implement strategies that promote a program-wide culture of the importance of mental health and social-emotional well-being.
  7. Reporting: Keep accurate records of all mental health and coaching services provided and maintain confidentiality. Prepare reports on the program's mental health and coaching initiatives and outcomes for management and stakeholders.
  8. Training: Provide training for staff and families on mental health awareness, trauma-informed care, and intervention strategies.
  9. Perform Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or child development. Master’s degree with licensure in a relevant mental health profession is preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience working with young children and families, particularly in early childhood education and/or counseling settings.
  • Strong understanding of child development, mental health issues, and community resources.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with staff, families, and community partners.
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • A criminal records background check, including fingerprint checks.
