The role of the HIM Coordinator assists in the facilitation of all HIM functions, including indexing, abstracting, coding, research, information release, filing, storage, retrieval and maintenance, transcription, and the Electronic Health Record. Identifies, reviews, interprets highly complex acuity, procedural, and diagnostic codes. Understands reimbursement and compliance with payer and regulatory requirements.
All duties conducted in accordance with federal, state, and local regulatory requirements, established policies and procedures, and quality standards.
HIM Manager
- Selects, trains/orients, and assigns department staff.
- Assists in the development of standards of performance, evaluating performance, and making recommendations for personnel actions.
- Assists in developing department goals and objectives, establishes, and implements policies and procedures for department operation.
- Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, quality assessment and safety standards.
- Provides recommendations for department operating budget and ensures that department operates within budget.
- Preparation and maintenance of department reports and collects statistical data for administrative and regulatory purposes.
- Maintains and fosters effective public relations with patients, the public, medical staff and hospital staff.
- Oversees daily activities of the department to optimize productivity.
- Develops, implements, and coordinates the departments continuous quality improvement program.
- Keeps informed on all applicable regulatory or industry trends relative to Health Information Management.
- Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in the field.
- Participates in hospital/medical staff committee meetings as required.
- Provides support to employees via troubleshooting, assisting with duties, etc. Is knowledgeable in all HIM operations and willing to assist in any capacity.
HIPPA Compliance
- Develops and provides training on health information privacy requirements and procedures.
- Evaluates the organizations existing policies and procedures for HIPAA compliance by performing HIPAA risk assessments.
- Collaborates with plan management, administration, and legal counsel to identify and address privacy policies and procedures that require improvement.
- Develops and assists with implementation of new and updated policies and procedures.
- Maintains policies and procedures related to PHI access and use; ensures strict adherence by all staff with access to PHI.
- Assesses methods and procedures used to store and transmit PHI; identifies security or other compliance risks and researches and recommends improvements.
- Maintains required records and supporting documentation including authorization forms, notices, and plan documents.
- Communicates with individuals regarding their right to inspect, amend, and restrict access to their PHI.
- Drafts and implements procedures for addressing and resolving complaints regarding the organizations privacy policies and procedures.
- Serves as the internal subject matter expert on HIPAA, maintaining current knowledge of HIPAA laws and regulations, and any other applicable federal and state privacy laws or regulations.
- Reports on changes in applicable laws and regulations and provides training as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education:
- Associate degree, RHIT, CCS, or RHIA Certified in either Health Information Management or Business preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years medical records service experience preferred.
