The Episcopal Diocese of Newark, a diocese of the Episcopal Church comprising 92 churches in the northern third of New Jersey, seeks a reliable and financial professional to serve as Controller. The Controller is responsible for directing and executing the financial accounting and reporting activities for the Diocese of Newark and related entities. These activities include budgeting, pledge collections and forecasting, payroll, electronic payment initiations, and financial reporting.
- Job Type: Part-time, exempt.
- Pay: $50,000 - $60,000 per year (Full-time equivalent to $83,000 - $100,000)
- Reports to: the Chief Financial Officer.
- Benefits: pension contribution (4%) and pension match (5%); life insurance; generous paid time off.
- Schedule: 24 hours per week. Current office policy is to have employees work in the office Tuesday through Thursday and from home on Monday and Friday, subject to change at any time. This role would require being in the office at least two days per week, with some flexibility beyond that.

Duties And Responsibilities
- Billing and recording pledge and other receipts
- Preparing electronic cash disbursements
- Issuing checks, as needed
- Preparing financial statements for all diocesan entities, including Diocesan Council, Trustees and Bishop’s Discretionary Fund
- Preparing semi-monthly payroll
- Oversight of the books, including all journal entries
- Intermediary for all Diocesan Investment Trust activity
- Assisting CFO in preparing budgets for Council and Trustees
- Monitoring bank balances and alerting CFO to any possible shortfalls
- Preparing audit schedules and otherwise assist the external auditors
- Supervising the Financial Assistant/Benefits Coordinator

- Comfort with bookkeeping systems and standard bookkeeping procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Respects the dignity of every person and congregation, treating all with courtesy and responding to them in a timely manner
- Ability to work under pressure and meet changing deadlines.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Successful completion of a background check.

- Must have a valid driver’s license, access to transportation, and insurance mandated by the state to fulfill responsibilities and duties.
