Basic Function

The Case Manager provides services that assist refugees in adjusting to life in the United States by helping the refugee or client meet immediate needs upon arrival and by preparing and implementing a resettlement plan in accordance with timelines and requirements of ETSS, LIRS, and/or other funding sources. We are looking for someone to support refugees from Ukraine as well as other populations.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as an advocate and resource for clients
  • Assist with preparation for the arrival of refugees assuring that housing is available and determining whether special medical attention will be required
  • Greets refugees at the airport and transports them to residences.
  • Provide orientation for clients as soon as possible following arrival in accordance with program and contractual guidelines.
  • Assists with the development of a self-sufficiency plan in cooperation with ETSS staff
  • Assists clients in applying for eligible public benefits, medical assistance, food stamps, cash assistance and other services needed.
  • Ensures that refugees receive initial health screening and medical care if needed.
  • Assists with scheduling medical and dental appointments.
  • Arranges for transportation for clients to appointments when appropriate.
  • Obtains the services of an interpreter whenever necessary to ensure culturally and linguistically appropriate delivery of services.
  • Monitors client progress through telephone or personal contacts throughout the period of service.
  • Maintains client case notes of all contacts with the client and documents all client services in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provides data required for various reports, and submits all required reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Serves as a liaison with the community regarding refugee resettlement questions and assists both the community and the clients in understanding their needs.
  • Assist clients in obtaining and retaining employment. Identify barriers to employment.
  • Coordinates services with other key staff to ensure comprehensive services for the refugees.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings.
  • Complies with all federal, state, and Lutheran Immigrant and Refugee Service Contracts
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills/Performance Requirements

  • Commitment to the human rights and general welfare of parolees asylum seekers, refugees, and immigrants.
  • Must be capable of working in a fast-paced, multicultural office environment, take initiative, and be able to handle and prioritize multiple assignments at once.
  • Valid driver’s license, clean driving record, auto insurance, and access to own transportation required. Must be willing to transport clients in your vehicle.
  • Must have the ability to work some late nights and weekends.
  • Must have strong organizational skills and attention to detail including comprehensive case noting.
  • Language capacity in common refugee language(s) is preferred, especially Russian or Ukraine. Proficiency in additional languages is a plus.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including keen listening and relationship building.
  • Negotiation and conflict management skills.
  • General knowledge of refugee resettlement practices in the U.S., is preferred.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications.

Education

Minimum of Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) in social work or related field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and demonstrated experience.

Experience

A minimum of three years of experience working in a nonprofit or social services environment is preferred. Minimum of three years of case management experience. Extensive experience, ability, and desire to work with people of other cultures. Also, experience working with refugees in the resettlement process is preferred. Must have experience working on various computer and web applications.
