The School Board of Polk County, FL – General Counsel Polk County Public Schools (PCPS) is the 7th largest school district in Florida, and the 24th largest school district in the nation, encompassing more than 120 schools and serving more than 117,000 students through both traditional K-12 schools and a variety of other programs. The PCPS District spans throughout Polk County, which comprises 2,011 square miles. The county includes 17 municipalities, ranging from Lakeland with a population of more than 125,000 to Dundee with a population of just over 6,300.The Polk County School Board is governed by a seven-member Board, which sets the organization’s policies, programs, and annual budget. The General Counsel reports to the School Board and provides proactive legal services to the School Board Members and Superintendent on all matters impacting the operation of the school system. The position serves as the attorney and senior legal advisor for the School Board, as well as the General Counsel for the School District. The General Counsel also assists Board Members in the legal performance of their duties, ensuring fair and just discharge of obligations to students, staff, employees, and the public.The School Board of Polk County, Florida seeks a results-oriented, collaborative, and grounded servant leader who is passionate about public education in a large, complex, and diverse public school system to be its next General Counsel. The General Counsel position requires graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctorate degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. Candidates should possess a minimum of five (5) years of experience as a practicing attorney with experience in education, governmental and / or administrative procedures / law. Additional experience with a focus on drafting legal documents and complex transactional negotiations, procurement / public finance, mediation, collective bargaining, public records, contracts and agreements, administrative hearing procedures, and Florida Sunshine Law is preferred. Florida Bar Board Certifications in Education Law; City, County, Local Government Law; Labor and Employment Law; or Administrative Law are preferred. The position also offers a flexible schedule including some hybrid work, with office hours generally mirroring the academic calendar.Applicants must currently be licensed to practice law in the State of Florida, admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, and be a member in good standing of the Florida Bar to apply.
