What are the responsibilities and job description for the Histology Lab Assistant position at Gastroenterology Specialties, PC?
We are a busy Gastroenterology office with 33 Providers. We are looking for a team-oriented individual to help us provide great care to our patients! This individual should show great attention to detail and demonstrate composure under pressure.
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: Assists with the day-to-day operations of the lab with regard to histology specimen processing. Performs receiving, accessioning, grossing, cutting, maintenance, and verification activities to support the histology staff in transforming fresh tissue specimens into microscopic slides to provide the pathologist data for diagnosis. Participates in laboratory operations as needed. Supports continuous improvement of laboratory services to ensure high quality and timely pathology for quality diagnosis.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Retrieves and receives specimens from designated areas and transports specimen to histology lab.
- Performs accessioning duties thoroughly and accurately enter specimen information in the necessary computer programs.
- Performs processing and grossing functions on specimens as directed and supervised by pathologist and lab manager once educational and training requirements have been met.
- Cuts processed tissue to prepare slide for analysis by Pathologist.
- Performs any maintenance and cleaning duties as directed by the supervisor.
- Supports continuous improvement of laboratory services to ensure high quality and timely pathology for quality diagnosis.
- Maintains knowledge of and adheres to established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
- Participates in organizational and departmental goals and performance improvement activities.
- Participates in personal and professional growth by attending in-services/educational workshops and scheduled departmental meetings.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
- Keeps regular and punctual attendance.
- Organizes and prioritizes work to complete responsibilities according to plan within established time frames.
- Performs other tasks and special assignments as directed by the supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIFICATIONS:
- Essential Technical/Motor Skills: Ability to manipulate various types of laboratory equipment, adjust and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and processes. Ability to operate specialty equipment related to area of expertise and to perform computer tasks.
- Interpersonal Skills: Must possess the ability to interact and to communicate in English, both orally and written, with all levels of staff and physicians in an effective manner. Must be sensitive to cultural and bilingual issues.
- Critical Thinking Abilities: Must possess the ability to comprehend and interpret complex clinical subject matter related to specialty. Ability to interpret rules/regulations/accrediting and licensing standards sufficiently for implementation. Ability to maintain concentration and organization while dealing with multiple issues. Ability to analyze data and formulate a plan of action. Ability to identify and resolve specimen and personnel problems in a timely and accurate manner. Must be able to handle emergent situations in which appropriate decisions will be required. Must be proficient in speaking, reading and writing English.
- Essential Sensory Requirements: Ability to manipulate small fragments of tissue as seen by the naked eye to ensure proper handling of the specimen.
- Exposure to Hazards: Requires exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and reagents.
- Other: Knowledgeable of the mission, vision and values of Gastroenterology Specialties P.C. Operates within the concept of patient-focused care. Evolves into effective team member. Must adhere to dress code, good grooming and personal hygiene habits. Cognizant of and conforms to all Gastroenterology Specialties P.C. policies and procedures.
EDUCATION: Must qualify for high-complexity testing according to CLIA regulations as follows:
- An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution,
Or;
- Education equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. Must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. IN ADDITION, must have laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in grossing surgical pathology specimens.
EXPERIENCE:
- Experience in a histology lab preferred.
