The Composite Process Engineer is responsible for developing and defining the processes used in the production of composite materials at GEOTEK. Using the available state of the art analytical tools at GEOTEK, the Composite Process Engineer will utilize both an analytical approach as well as hands-on experimentation to define new manufacturing processes, optimize existing processes, and support new material development and R&D activities. The ideal candidate will be a leader who is highly motivated, a self-starter, and hands-on. The ideal candidate will also have a strong interest in high-performance fiberglass composite materials, with particular interest in the associated manufacturing processes. They will be detailed oriented and data-driven, balancing both analytical and experimental approaches to pragmatically find solutions and solve problems. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Champion optimization of pultruded and filament wound composites and the pultrusion and filament winding manufacturing processes to support product performance and longevity, and production efficiency and productivity
- Manage continuous improvement and design projects independently with the ability to troubleshoot problems, and develop and propose solutions independently
- Coaching and assisting new engineers in developing solutions to a wide variety of manufacturing improvement and design projects
- Characterize effects of composite construction variations on processability and product performance
- Support engineering and R&D pultrusion and filament winding trials as directed
- Support quality sustainment and improvement projects as directed
- Identify, design, purpose, implement, and train on new equipment, technologies, and processes to promote safety, quality, and productivity
- Communicate effectively with suppliers, contactors, and other project stakeholders regarding projects
- Support business growth by aiding in the research, trials, and manufacturing implementation of new products
- Support pultrusion and filament winding operations teams as directed, providing technical assistance and training to crews on pultrusion and filament winding processes and equipment operation
- Utilize SolidWorks to develop custom fixtures and tooling to support the pultrusion & filament winding process
- Support maintenance team as directed to ensure preventative maintenance tasks are documented appropriately
- Maintain clear, complete and accurate records for project documentation and future reference
- Provide regular updates on assigned projects
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace
Job Requirements
- Four-year bachelor’s degree in engineering (Composites, Mechanical, or Manufacturing preferred, Chemical or Material science will be considered); Advanced degrees are desirable.
- 4 year post-graduate experience working in a manufacturing environment required; Pultrusion or filament winding experience is also considered highly desirable.
- Strong desire for a hands-on approach to process improvement and manufacturing composite materials, backed by analytical skills and tools.
- Strong desire for a candidate with a black belt in Lean Six Sigma methodology.
- SolidWorks experience with 3D modeling of parts, assemblies, and drawings with GD&T per ANSI Y14.5; Formal GD&T training highly preferred.
- Must be a problem solver, energetic, self-motivated, and self-starting. Capable of managing and prioritizing multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently, as well as with others in a team environment.
- Familiarity with common thermoset resin systems, including polyester, vinyl-ester, and urethane is highly desirable.
- Excellent communication skills (written and oral) are essential, including the ability to develop and deliver messaging efficiently. The ability to work with different levels of staff from line workers to managers throughout the organization is highly desirable.
- Experience with MS Office Suite of programs, including MS Project, is desirable.
- Detail oriented and organized to ensure successful and on-time project deliverables.
- Ability to support occasional off-shift trials and production support requests, as required.
- Must be able to stand, lift, use manual tools, and power tools.
- Must adhere to all corporate policies and procedures.
- Must remain flexible as priorities change.
The compensation range for this position is $94,500-$141,800. Final offers may vary based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The posted range represents the expected earning potential for this position within the current organizational budget and market conditions
Physical Work Conditions
Time should be split between the floor and the office or meeting rooms ranging anywhere from 25% to 75% on the production floor or engineering labs. While working on the floor there will be work with and around moving machinery, fumes, and chemicals. Office work requires sitting at a desk, using a computer and phone.
