Position Summary
The Director, Volunteer Support oversees all facets of the strategic development and implementation of initiatives that empower and support volunteers to deliver an exceptional Girl Scout experience. This leader ensures volunteers are equipped with the tools, training, and resources to succeed while fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity. This role emphasizes volunteer recruitment, retention, recognition, and leadership development, driving the mission and vision of Girl Scouts within the Council’s jurisdiction. The Director will promote strong volunteer development of managers to actively support the needs of service units and their administrative volunteers, while building consistent and efficient processes in an inclusive environment for all adults in which their needs, competencies, skills, and interests are matched to their specific Girl Scout volunteer positions.
At Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri, most of our roles work in a hybrid capacity (in office, remote, and/or in the field). Details will be provided during the interview process.

The position is full time with a competitive starting annualized salary of $77,364!
Essential Job Duties
Volunteer Strategy and Leadership
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy for recruiting, onboarding, training, and retaining volunteers.
- Lead initiatives to enhance volunteer satisfaction, performance, and engagement.
- Lead development of annual volunteer survey to determine opportunities for growth and improvement.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align volunteer support with organizational goals.
- Monitor volunteer trends and develop data-driven recommendations for improvement.
Training and Development
- Design and oversee the execution of volunteer training programs, including in-person, virtual, and self-paced learning options.
- Provide leadership development opportunities to volunteers, fostering skills that enhance their service and personal growth.
- Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of training materials and methods, updating as needed.
Volunteer Experience and Recognition
- Develop and execute strategies to improve the overall volunteer experience, including recognition programs that celebrate contributions and milestones.
- Act as a liaison between the organization and volunteers to address concerns, provide guidance, and ensure alignment with Girl Scout values, policies, and procedures.
- Collaborates in the planning and implementation of all volunteer events and initiatives that foster a sense of community among volunteers.
Partnership and Outreach
- Build and maintains positive partnerships with local organizations and community groups to expand the volunteer network.
- Represent the Girl Scouts at community events, promoting the value of volunteer involvement.
- Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to develop volunteer recruitment campaigns.
Operational Excellence
- Provide direct oversight, supervisory and administrative responsibility for all functions related to volunteer support operations, including the Answer Center, Troop Placement, Adult Education, and Volunteer Support divisions.
- Develop and maintain volunteer position descriptions, customizing as deemed necessary.
- Maintain accurate records and data on volunteer engagement using CRM and other organizational tools.
- Analyze volunteer data to generate reports and inform strategic decision-making.
- Plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of GSEM volunteer positions and opportunities.
- Create a comprehensive standardized volunteer feedback process.
- Manage the budget for volunteer programs, ensuring cost-effectiveness.
- Participates in the development of council action plans and risk management systems as they relate to the volunteer management system.
- Oversee the screening (interviews, required background checks, etc.) and match volunteers to organizational needs and opportunities.
- Design and implement systems to enhance effectiveness of internal efforts to recruit, appreciate, and retain volunteers throughout the eastern Missouri jurisdiction.
- Serve as a collaborative team member, working to advance the mission of Girl Scouts.
- Perform other duties as required and/or assigned.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, education, human resources, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Five (5) years of experience in volunteer management, training, or a related leadership role.
- Experience with youth-serving organizations or similar mission-driven nonprofit organizations.
- Valid state driver’s license, proof of insurance, and a driving record that is acceptable to our insurance carrier.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and engage diverse stakeholders.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and CRM platforms; experience with volunteer management software is a plus.
- Organized thinker with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing, and the ability to speak and present confidently and credibly in public.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to manage partner relationships.
- Ability to provide a high level of customer service to internal and external customers, and to represent the organization in a professional manner.
- Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently, under limited direction, exercising judgment and initiative in making decisions within Council operations, policies, and procedures.
- Ability to work in an environment of confidential data, and keep information confidential and private.
- Ability to work well in a fast-paced, dynamic organization.
- Ability to work some nights and weekends and travel throughout the jurisdiction.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee:
Must be able to remain in a stationary position 75% of the time operating a computer, including navigating websites, software platforms, spreadsheets and both electronic and paper documents.
Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery such as a calculator, copier, and computer printer.
Occasionally positions self to maintain files in file cabinets.
May need to move boxes weighing up to 25 pounds across office for various needs.
The ability to observe details at close range and at a distance.
Is required to drive/ operate an automobile.
Work Environment
Constantly works in an indoor professional office environment. Exposed to moderate noise levels.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has direct reporting responsibilities.
