What are the responsibilities and job description for the Technician II - Relay position at GRDA?

Position Overview
This is an unclassified (exempt) position performing specialized transmission and distribution system
services for the T&D Operations Division of the Grand River Dam Authority as assigned by the VP – T&D
Operations.

Supervision Received
Reports directly to a Relay Technician Lead or the Relay Supervisor within the Relay Department. Works
in conjunction with other Departments for technical resources and Customer Services.


Essential job functions include, but are not limited to:


  • Test, sets, and repairs protective relays and related switch gear and control equipment, including batteries and battery chargers for GRDA and GRDA customers.
  • Prepares and keeps test reports for CIP compliance, insurance companies, and SPP/NERC (Southwest Power Pool and North American Electric Reliability Corporation). PRC-005
  • Commissions new substations and new equipment proving protection schemes work as designed.
  • Tests carriers in conjunction with the communication department to prove functionality and alarms are received by operations.
  • Subject to unscheduled callouts for restoration of electrical service to the GRDA system
  • Attend and take part in monthly safety meetings and training classes.
  • Selected Candidates will have to: 1. Enroll in the GRDA Relay apprenticeship program consisting of 2080 hours of on-the-job training and completion with a passing grade of the Bismark Relay apprenticeship 3rd and 4thyear courses2. Complete and attend all GRDA needed safety training
  • Aids in troubleshooting and may supply technical advice during repair activities as assigned.
  • Ability to understand and implement troubleshooting and repair procedures for protection and control systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematic, wiring, and control drawings
  • Excellent organizational and communicative skills

  • Functional competency with personal computers; prefer experience with Excel, DOBLE RTS,
    POWERBASE, and Word.
  • Must be capable of learning and applying technical and computer skills needed to use testing
    equipment and reporting software associated with energy related services provided by GRDA.
  • Any training regarding DOBLE RTS or POWERBASE software
  • Familiarity with lockout tag-out procedures.
  • Must be familiar with safety practices involved in working around energized high voltage equipment
    within substations, distribution systems, and customer electrical systems.


Education, Training, Experience:

  • Minimum High-School Education or GED
  • Requirements at this level consist of two years of experience performing skilled maintenance work in the electrical maintenance craft; or completion of two years of a four-year apprenticeship program in the electrical maintenance craft; or completion of a two-year course of study, in the electrical maintenance craft, at a recognized trade, technical or vocational school; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certificates, Registrations, Licenses:


  • Valid Oklahoma driver’s license, or the ability to convert within 30 days for those with an out of state driver’s license that are an Oklahoma resident.

Environmental Conditions & Safety Concerns:


  • Regular work is performed indoors and outdoors for scanning, testing, and troubleshooting of
    systems and equipment and in an office environment for preparation of reports.
  • Must be able to work in outside environments in cold and hot weather with minimum supervision.
  • Emergency aid work may be performed outdoors and/or indoors in a high noise/elevated temperature
    environment with work in confined spaces.
  • Emergency “callout” work during inclement weather and at any time of day may be needed.


Other information:

  • Office area is currently provided at the Transmission headquarters near Pryor, Oklahoma. Specific
    work sites and substation locations exist throughout the northeastern quarter of Oklahoma and/or
    other locations in the U.S., as assigned.
