Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Excavation Foreman to oversee and lead excavation operations specializing in site development and water, sanitary and storm sewer pipe installation for various construction projects. The Foreman will be responsible for setting and managing timeline expectations, supervising a crew, ensuring safe and efficient operations, and coordinating tasks to meet project deadlines and quality standards. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, hands-on experience with excavation and underground utilities, and a solid understanding of site development processes.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Crew Supervision & Leadership:
- Lead and supervise the site development team, laborers, and equipment operators on-site.
- Provide guidance and ensure proper training of crew members.
- Assign daily tasks and ensure all work is completed safely, on time, and according to project specifications.
- Maintain a positive work environment, addressing any personnel issues and motivating the team to meet project goals.
- Site Development & Excavation:
- Oversee excavation work for site preparation, including grading, trenching, and earthmoving for residential, commercial, or municipal projects.
- Ensure proper processes for water and sewer line installations are completed.
- Monitor and inspect worksites to ensure compliance with project plans, safety regulations, and local codes.
- Watermain, Storm & Sanitary Sewer Installation:
- Supervise the installation of watermain, storm and sanitary sewer systems, including excavation, laying pipes, backfilling, and compaction.
- Ensure the accurate placement of pipes, fittings, and other materials to ensure system integrity and functionality.
- Collaborate with engineers and project managers to ensure systems are installed to specifications and meet quality control standards.
- Safety & Compliance:
- Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols and OSHA regulations to prevent accidents and injuries.
- Conduct daily safety briefings and ensure that all crew members are equipped with proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify potential hazards and take corrective action to mitigate risks on the job site.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal codes and regulations related to excavation and underground utility work.
- Quality Control & Reporting:
- Inspect and monitor the quality of the work performed by the crew, ensuring it meets or exceeds company standards and client expectations.
- Communicate project progress, challenges, and any delays to the Project Manager/Operations Manager.
- Maintain accurate records of daily activities, materials used, and labor hours.
- Equipment Management:
- Oversee the proper use and maintenance of excavation equipment, ensuring machinery is in good working condition.
- Report equipment issues to the maintenance team and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.
- Technology
- Understanding of Topcon and Trimble GPS Systems.
- Ability to work with project management software.
- Record as-builts as needed for projects.
Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in excavation and site development, with a focus on water and sewer installation.
- Leadership: Proven experience leading and managing crews, with a strong ability to motivate and guide workers.
- Technical Skills: Solid understanding of excavation techniques, site development, trenching, and underground utilities (water/sewer).
- Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with OSHA regulations and safety practices in excavation and utility installation work.
- Equipment Knowledge: Hands-on experience with excavation equipment (e.g., excavators, skid steers, loaders, bulldozers, GPS systems).
- Communication: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with clients, engineers, and team members.
- Problem-Solving: Strong ability to troubleshoot issues and find effective solutions on-site.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors in physically demanding conditions and lift heavy materials as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred).
- First Aid/CPR certification.
