Reports To: Business and Safety Manager 

Type of position: Non-Exempt/Hourly 

Employee Classification: Regular 

Location: Bryson City, NC 

Compensation: $22-29 hourly 


Job Summary: The Project & Safety Specialist will play a pivotal role in supporting the Business and Safety Manager, as well as the General Manager, across all operational functions within the organization. With a primary emphasis on enhancing the company's safety culture, this position will be responsible for upholding and enforcing policies and procedures in alignment with company standards and regulatory requirements. Collaborating closely with General Managers and Senior Management, the incumbent will contribute to the formulation and execution of strategies aimed at achieving organizational objectives. Additionally, the individual will collaborate with multiple departments to ensure all safety and risk management requirements are adequately addressed.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Business and Safety Manager and the General Manager in day-to-day. 
  • Assist Senior Management to develop and implement business plans and strategies to achieve the company’s overall objectives.
  • Serves as a proactive team member, providing hands-on assistance whenever necessary to ensure the successful completion of projects.
  •  Collaborate with the Business and Safety Manager to uphold adherence to AHR policies, procedures, as well as regulations set forth by the FRA, OSHA, EPA, and others.
  • Project coordination support for acquisition due diligence processes and aid in negotiating rates and contracts.
  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Assisting the Business and Safety Manager in developing project plans, timelines, and budgets.
  •  Facilitate the coordination of project resources, including personnel, materials, and equipment. 
  •  Collaborate with managers to source materials, obtain quotes, and create purchase orders for approval by senior management.
  • Monitor project progress and provide regular status updates to the Business and Safety Manager.
  • Assist with management of company owned and leased properties including maintenance and general building requests. 
  • Coordinator and assist the application process for permitting needs, including but not limited to building and construction on company owned property.
  • Work with the Business and Safety Manager and GSMR Senior Management to maintain the Safety Rule Book, Operating Rule Book, Timetable, Redbook, and Emergency Response Plan. 
  • Acquire comprehensive understanding of all GSMR equipment and its operations to guarantee it functions safely and as intended.
  • Provide leadership to the GSMR Management team as it relates to company safety policies and procedures.
  • Work with the Human Resources department to expose all newly hired employees to GSMR safety policies and procedures through orientations. 
  • Work with the Human Resources department to train all newly hired employees to GSMR safety policies and procedures.
  • Assist Department Managers with regularly scheduled Safety Briefings/Toolbox Talks by providing content and materials.
  • Collaborate with department managers to ensure that GSMR staff has all necessary safety equipment and PPE with continuous coaching to ensure success for employees. 
  • Guarantee the efficient and effective utilization of the safety budget.
  • Manage the completion of incident/injury reporting for investigation documentation purposes and assist Department Managers with follow up when an incident/injury occurs. 
  • Act as the point of contact for Senior Management for follow up on injury/incident investigations. 
  • Conduct regular job site audits to ensure safety is enforced with personnel, equipment, and materials. 
  • Work closely with Department Managers to implement safety protocols to proactively reduce risk. 
  • Prepare, organize and conduct safety training sessions for employees and Sub contractors. (i.e. First Aid/CPR, Redbook, OSHA 10, Forklift, Respirator Fit Testing, Driver Compliance and Golf Cart.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Work Environment:

  • Time spent equally in the field/ properties and an office setting. 
  • Some time spent walk around active railyards and event spaces where uneven surfaces and extreme weather conditions may exist.
  • Some time spent traveling.

Requirements

Education, Skill & Work Experience Requirements

  •     Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Project Management, or related field preferred.
  •     Proven experience as a project or safety lead or similar role.
  •     Experience in the selling of products, services and experiences.
  •     Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  •     Ability to analyze data, financials and make strategic decisions.
  •     Familiarity with reading and understanding legal and regulatory requirements.
