What are the responsibilities and job description for the Dog Warden/Humane Officer position at Hancock County Commission?

Enforce West Virginia laws related to animal welfare, conduct investigations, and manage potentially dangerous or challenging situations involving animals. Includes both independent decision-making and public interaction, with duties performed indoors, outdoors, and in physically demanding conditions that may involve risk.

Examples of Work

1. Dog Bite Investigations: Address and document incidents involving dog bites.

2. Rabies Response: Capture and manage animals suspected of carrying rabies.

3. Law Enforcement: Enforce animal-related laws and ordinances.

4. Abuse/Neglect Investigations: Investigate complaints of animal mistreatment.

5. Animal Capture: Safely apprehend stray, injured, or problematic animals.

6. Additional Tasks: Execute other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education, Certification, and Experience: High School diploma or equivalent, certification for animal euthanasia desirable but not required. Must be capable of being bonded to carry a firearm and pass firearm qualifications with duty weapon. Must be physically capable of lifting 80 – 100 lbs and have the agility to capture animals on all terrain. Law enforcement or veterinarian skills helpful. Employee must be available on call, 24/7, when scheduled for emergencies. License: Valid West Virginia driver’s license. Work Environment Works in office conditions approximately 10 percent of work time, works in off-site office conditions approximately 30 percent of work time, works in outdoor conditions approximately 30 percent of time, remaining 30 percent of the time is spent in travel.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $36,000.00 - $42,000.00 per year
