Job Description
1. Customs Compliance: Customs brokers are responsible for ensuring that importers/exporters comply with the customs laws, regulations, and procedures in the United States. Stay updated on changes in customs regulations and inform clients about any new requirements or updates.
2. Documentation and Recordkeeping: Customs brokers assist clients in preparing and submitting the necessary documentation for customs clearance. This includes completing import/export declarations, commercial invoices, packing lists, and other relevant documents. Maintain accurate records of all transactions and documents related to import and export activities.
3. Customs Classification: Customs brokers classify goods according to the Harmonized Tariff Schedule. Accurate classification is crucial as it determines the applicable customs duties, taxes, and regulatory requirements.
4. Duty and Tax Calculation: Customs brokers calculate the customs duties, taxes, and fees payable for imported or exported goods. Consider factors such as the country of origin, applicable trade agreements, customs preferences, and any applicable exemptions or concessions.
5. Customs Clearance and Release: Customs brokers submit import/export declarations to customs and facilitate the clearance and release of goods. Liaise with customs officials, port authorities, and other relevant parties to ensure the timely and efficient processing of shipments.
6. Regulatory Compliance: Customs brokers ensure compliance with various government agencies and regulatory bodies, such as FDA, EPA, DOT, etc. Assist clients in meeting specific regulatory requirements related to the nature of the goods being imported or exported.
7. Problem Resolution: Customs brokers help resolve any issues or disputes that may arise during the customs clearance process. This may include addressing discrepancies in documentation, resolving customs examinations or inspections, handling duty disputes, and managing post-clearance audits or investigations.
8. Client Communication and Consultation: Customs brokers provide advice and guidance to clients regarding customs compliance, trade regulations, and strategies for optimizing customs processes. Communicate with clients regularly, keeping them informed about the progress and status of their shipments.
Required Qualifications
1. Possession of a valid customs broker license is mandatory.
2. A bachelor's degree in business, logistics, international trade, or a related field is preferred.
3. Previous experience in customs brokerage, international trade, or related fields is highly desirable.
4. Familiarity with U.S. customs regulations and procedures is necessary.
5. Experience working with the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) system
6. Strong knowledge of international trade, logistics, and supply chain management is beneficial.
7. Excellent command of the English language, both written and verbal, is essential. Proficiency in additional languages may be advantageous in dealing with clients from various countries.
