Description

Job Summary:
This is a remote of in-person position. Hawaii Pacific University (HPU) School of Social Work in the College of Liberal Arts is seeking a highly motivated teacher and/or practitioner to teach and develop graduate courses in social work. The MSW program will be transitioning to an online format (Fall 2024 is the anticipated start date) and thus online teaching is required. The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching a total of five courses (15 credits) throughout the academic year and developing four new online field education courses to enhance our program offerings. Online courses will be developed in partnership with HPU’s office of Online Programs and Academic Partnerships or the external company LearningMate. Online courses will be built out in Canvas therefore experience with Canvas or another related LMS is desirable. The successful candidate may be a resident in Hawai’i or may work remotely.
The successful candidate is also required to maintain competence in the academic field by remaining current in their own and related disciplines and utilizing the most effective instructional methods. They will also demonstrate effectiveness in the synthesis, interpretation, and communication of new knowledge.
In addition to instructional and scholarly activity, faculty will participate in commencement, convocations and other university-wide events, and department and collegiate meetings in the week before the start of academic terms. Faculty presence and engagement is expected during academic terms that faculty have teaching responsibilities. Faculty may be asked to be present in person for certain events such as graduation or cultural immersion experiences.
This is a full-time, 9-month position with up to 15 credits of teaching responsibility and the development of 12 credits (four courses) of field practicum.
HPU is a private, non-profit institution of approximately 3,500 undergraduate and 800 graduate students. Founded in 1965, it is Hawai’i’s largest private university with its core campus in the heart of Honolulu’s business district.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:

  • MSW from a CSWE accredited program with a minimum of two years post MSW practice experience, or a doctoral degree in a closely related field (e.g. public health, psychology, sociology).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses online in a university setting.
  • Basic skills in using an online LMS to deliver course content.
  • Prior experience with curriculum development.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated promise of institutional and professional service mentoring beyond teaching.
  • Strong commitment to inclusivity and diversity, and ability to interact effectively with diverse cultural and ethnic groups.
  • An earned doctorate in Social Work or related field.
  • Strong interest in the diversity of BSW/MSW program options that include serving the military and rural and indigenous areas, and with clinical interests in the State of Hawaii.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Prior experience with field education.
  • Prior experience with assessment, program evaluation, and CSWE programmatic accreditation
  • Prior experience in the practice of social work at more than one level (micro, mezzo, macro).
  • One year of full-time teaching experience in an accredited social work program with demonstrated excellence in teaching.
Other Qualifications:
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Report to work obligations to support the department may require work during HPU’s winter and summer breaks.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Able to teach classes scheduled during days, evenings, and weekends.
  • Able to teach classes online.
  • Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that demands multiple tasks to be completed within brief and immediate deadlines; an ideal candidate will utilize excellent time and stress management skills.
  • Upon hire, must be able to provide a tuberculosis clearance.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:Note: Percentages are estimates.
  • Develop Online Courses (30-40%)
  • Work collaboratively with the Office of Online Programs and Academic Partnerships to develop a Canvas course shell for four field practicum courses (e.g. SWRK 6900, SWRK 6901, SWRK 7900, and SWRK 7901)
  • Develop a syllabus of course activities that meet the requirements of the course description, establishes appropriate student learning outcomes, and provides for appropriate class activities to be deployed throughout the semester.
  • Ensure that course student learning outcomes appropriately map onto CSWE student learning outcome requirements.
  • Ensure that online courses contain field learning agreements, hours log templates, and all other necessary course embedded assignments and program assessment measures.
2. Teaching (40-50%)
  • Teach up to 15 credits of graduate course work in social work.
  • Plan and deliver individual classes that conform to the syllabus and other requirements of the University.
  • Demonstrate a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively in the context of an integrated education.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records on student participation and performance, use appropriate measures and evaluate student performance on the basis of established student learning outcomes, provide timely feedback to students and assign grades that are an accurate and fair evaluation of student work.
  • Submit grades and any other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Administer student evaluations of faculty at the end of each course, review evaluation summaries and meet with department chair and dean to review.
  • Post and maintain regular virtual office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.
  • Serve as an advisor to students to assist them in understanding the curriculum, especially within the major, and mentor them as they plan their degree programs and careers.
  • Meet deadlines and follow directions of the program/department chair, Associate Dean or Dean of the College.
  • Evaluate the teaching of colleagues through the process of peer review as requested.
3. University Service (5-10%)
  • Attend orientation programs and Faculty Assembly meetings and participate in academic duties, including academic advising for undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Assist with the recruitment of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Participate in committees; course, program and curriculum area coordination; curricular development and textbook selection; instructional workshops and activities within own curricular areas, policy and program review; or other learning assessments.
  • Assist with co-curricular activities and/or cultural immersion experiences.
  • Meet department and college specific expectations for university service. Community service is not required except in certain departments when necessary to meet accreditation requirements as outlined in an individual department's promotion and review criteria.
4.Performs other related duties as appropriate (5%)
  • Actively participate as an effective member of the team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
