Providence Public Schools District (PPSD) seeks an exceptional HIGH SCHOOL ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL who is highly qualified and skillful to join our community of teachers, students and stakeholders.

 

We serve approximately 22,000 students at 37 elementary, middle, and high schools. Approximately 55% of students come from homes where English is not the primary language spoken. Combined, our students and families speak over 75 different languages and hail from 91 countries of origin.

 

The Assistant Principal is responsible for supporting the principal with administering and supervising the total school program by establishing high expectations student achievement; building a positive school climate that supports the whole student; leveraging research and data to drive initiatives and instruction; and building and developing a high-performing staff and leadership team to achieve the school’s vision and goals. The assistant principal will support the principal in building collaborative partnerships with parents, community members, consultants, as well as, other internal/external resources and stakeholders to implement educational programs, capital improvements, systems reform, tools and other resources to accelerate student achievement. 

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: The assistant principal works under the general supervision of a superior with latitude for the exercise of initiative and independent judgment; work is reviewed upon completion through conferences and reports for conformance to established policies, objectives, rules and regulations.      

 

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Plans, coordinates, organizes, supervises and evaluates the work of an instructional, professional, technical and clerical staff.

 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with an emphasis in educational administration/leadership; and\
  • Minimum of five (5) years in teaching experience
  • Administrative residency in an urban school setting, preferred
  • Must have had experience in a teacher leadership position which provided the opportunities to engage in the following: lead collaborative data analysis, action planning, lesson study, and peer observation

 

RIDE Certification Requirements:

  • Rhode Island Department of Education Certification Building Administration PK-12

 

Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, school operations, and student services 
  • Led and/or supported school improvement planning
  • Coordinated school engagement activities
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Confidence to lead a community of diverse learners
  • Focus on action and results in order to create a positive learning culture
  • Ability to build and lead adult teams to promote the mission and vision of PPSD
  • Must have the knowledge and skills to build positive relationships with people
  • from diverse populations
  • Commitment to the mission and vision of PPSD and the relevance of job functions to that mission and vision
  • You must complete the new hire compliance training prior to your first day of employment
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check. Selected candidates cannot begin work until passing their background check
  • Bilingual preferred

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Under the direction of the building principal, the assistant principal will: 

 

  1. Promote a widely shared institutional belief that every child deserves and can have expert instruction and that all team members must be advocates for students
  2. Set high performance goals for themselves and others despite instability and obstacles to success
  3. Create a sense of urgency and takes immediate action to ensure early successes
  4. Establish and monitor high standards for excellence with students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders
  5. Align school resources and prioritizes activities to achieve maximum results based on vision and goals
  6. Relentlessly focus school activities on student achievement
  7. Effectively plan and take action to achieve goals and objectives without direction
  8. Consistently identify potential issues and obstacles and proactively take action to create and implement solutions
  9. Formulate and execute on action plans despite ambiguity, obstacles or resistance.
  10. Establish a culture of learning and achievement
  11. Act consistently to influence others’ thinking and behavior to achieve results.
  12. Communicate a clear vision of success and benefits to engage others
  13. Identify and engage stakeholders (e.g. parents, community) to drive consensus, build trust and facilitate change
  14. Influence others to take action and demands change
  15. Effectively build and organize adult teams to mirror vision and produce maximum results
  16. Understand team strengths and gaps
  17. Select assignments to build team capacity
  18. Effectively delegate to others and engage team in decision-making
  19. Encourage learning and consistently provides instruction, expectations, feedback and other developmental activities to encourage leadership and build capacity

  22. Analyze complex information to formulate strategic vision and develop action plans

  25. Develop right balance of strategic and tactical plans to achieve immediate success while maintaining long-term vision
  26. Develop effective processes to achieve desired results

Salary : $114,761 - $124,984
