Job Position: Fire Captain/EMT Fire Captain/Paramedic
Classification: Non-Exempt, Full-time
Starting Date: November 14, 2024

Fire Captain
Under general direction, plans, coordinates, assigns, directs, and participates in emergency and non-emergency operations and activities of an assigned shift in a fire station. Serves as the initial incident commander on emergency scenes and must exercise independent and sound judgement. Reports directly to the Battalion Chief but may be required to fill in for the battalion chief on an acting basis. Is responsible for station-based training, fire, and life safety education activities, and pre fire planning. Captain will participate and supervise the care and maintenance of fire station, apparatus, equipment, and grounds. The captain efficiently and effectively carries out assigned activities according to department and tribal guidelines and policies. Performs firefighting, emergency and non-emergency medical response and related activities.
Duties

- Plan, coordinate, assign, direct, and participate in emergency and non-emergency response.
- Ensures assigned activities are carried out effectively, and efficiently.
- Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities.
- Administers medical care in accordance with scope of practice, medical direction, and protocols.
- Identifies resources needs, review with appropriate management staff, and implement improvements.
- Direct, coordinate, supervise, and review the work plan for assigned personnel.
- Assigns work activities and projects, monitor workflow, and review and evaluate work.
- Respond to alarms involving fire, medical, gas leaks, hazardous substances, and rescue work.
- Direct and perform firefighting, rescue, and other medical care duties.
- Accounts for and tracks personnel at all incidents.
- Quickly identifies and addresses critical incident safety hazards.
- Directs and participate in equipment and station maintenance, fire prevention and inspection.
- Prepares, submits, and maintains response on emergency calls and department activities
- Communicates effectively with command and personnel.
- Conduct and coordinate training
- Work with employee to correct deficiencies and enforce departmental policies.
- Provide staffing assistance to the Battalion Chief
- Applies risk management principles to tactical situations.
- Serves as a safety officer, observing and proactively intervening for fire company safety.
- Trains firefighters in the responsibilities of the Engineer position/Driver Operator.
- Attends classes as necessary in firefighting, EMS, and related duties.
- Coordinate emergency and non-emergency response activities.
- Participates in public education activities and community risk reduction.
- Participates in physical fitness.
- All other duties as assigned.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Knowledge of:
- Triage, treatment, and patient transport protocols.
- Standing orders and offline medical direction.
- Department goals and objectives.
- Techniques and methods of fire suppression.
- All BLS or ALS related equipment necessary accomplish to job functions.
- Some knowledge of hazardous materials relative to fire suppression.
- Incident Command Systems.
- Fire prevention and community risk reduction aspects of the fire service.
- Firefighting principles and practices.
- Hydraulics and their application to the operation of fire apparatus.
- The Geographical layout of streets, addresses, and hydrant locations.
- Procedures and equipment used in modern firefighting and emergency response activities.
- Pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations
- Modern and complex principles and practices of firefighting and related activities.
Ability to:
- Follow both written and oral direction or communication.
- Communicate in a written and verbal manner.
- Exercise appropriate safety tactics in firefighting and medical emergencies.
- Handle high levels of personal stress and maintain composure under a variety of adverse conditions.
- Respond to, analyze, and mitigate hazards pertaining to life safety and property conservation
- Utilize power tools of a hydraulic, electronic, and pneumatic nature
- Utilize personal protective equipment including
- Operate various tools and equipment necessary to firefighting and medical functions.
- Work and think critically and independently to accomplish complex and time sensitive tasks.
- Understand the effects of fire involvement and spread as its related to rescue of firefighters.
- Identify critical incident scene safety factors and address them accordingly
- Understand and operate within the Incident Command System
Minimum Qualifications
- (4) Four years of current consecutive firefighting experience, including two years as a Fire Engineer.
- Valid Arizona Class D Driver’s License.
- IFSAC/AZ Firefighter I & II or equivalent
- AZDHS EMT or ability to obtain
- Wildland FFT2
- NFA Leadership in Supervision I, II, III
- Fire Officer I
- Fire Instructor I
Preferred/Desirable
- Associates Degree in fire science, public administration, or another related field
- MAG 300, MAG 400
- AZDHS Paramedic
- 1 year working in a Tribal setting
