The Role of Teacher within Steel City Academy

At Steel City, we believe our greatest driver for success is our people. We know that the most important part of the educational model is the design and execution of our instructional model, the quality of our instruction and the effectiveness of our team.

Overview of Steel City Academy

Steel City Academy seeks to redefine the expectations, results and model for a K-12 education in Gary by preparing our graduates with the knowledge, purpose, power and transformative experiences to choose from boundless opportunities while strengthening the community of Gary. Our school community is rooted in our love of Gary and our embodiment of our five core values: Power, Purpose, Team, Grit and Joy.

As a stand alone, community public charter school, Steel City opened its doors in August 2016 we opened our doors to 120 middle and high school students. As we look to the 2025-2026 school year we will serve upwards of 500 students in grades K-12. Currently Steel City Academy is the only A rated school in the city of Gary.

Position Summary

At Steel City Academy, we believe student success occurs when they achieve strong academic results, deeply understand themselves as individuals, navigate diverse sets of experiences, and embrace and create opportunities for themselves and others. In order to be able assess and monitor our students' progress towards this holistic success, we will use interim assessments to measure growth and year-end state assessments to ensure our students receive an equitable education compared to those in their community, state, and nation. Non-academic goals will be measured and monitored as well.

Primary Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to

  • Model expectations to students by arriving to school on time, prepared to teach, and reflecting school values in all interactions with members of our community
  • Create and foster a positive learning environment
  • Implement the school-wide student management policies within classrooms and everywhere on campus
  • Maintain a neat, clean classroom environment and a professional personal appearance
  • Advise a small group of students to success as indicated by academics and character
  • Establish and maintain strong communication lines with all parents, including attending all required conferences
  • Assist in development of curriculum standards and mapping
  • Create and teach challenging and engaging lesson linked to state and college readiness standards
  • Provide individual and small group instruction until all students achieve mastery.
  • Give informal and formal assessments, weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
  • Participate in and initiate productive student centered discussions at data meetings, in department teams, with grade level advisors, school leadership, and other meetings as necessary
  • Perform clerical duties, as required, relating to textbooks, instructional supplies, student reports and records, attendance reports, etc.
  • Attend all professional development and staff meetings
  • Actively engage in collaboration with grade level and content team colleagues
  • Perform morning, lunch, and afternoon duties as assigned
  • Additional responsibilities may arise during the school year. This could include but not limited to: attending staff and student field trips, overnight trips, open houses, parent-teacher conferences, home visits, and other events involving parents and students as needed. They will be communicated to all employees with as much notice and flexibility as possible.

Qualifications: Skills

  • Strong organizational skills. Ability to manage several tasks and projects at once
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively and flexibly in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Good judgment and sense of personal responsibility; exceptional maturity, professionalism, and ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to plan and manage projects independently and collaboratively and also ability to manage up to effectively ensure key milestones are being met
  • Strong MS Office skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and/or a propensity to learn new systems quickly
  • Proficiency with Google sites and documents preferred

Qualifications: Education and Prior Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Preferred 2 years of teaching experience
  • Current teaching certificate/ licensure

Work Demands

  • Ability and willingness to travel occasionally for team conferences and overnight field trips when required
  • Working outside of typical school hours to ensure school mission, vision and expectations are met
  • Attend school and community events and functions
  • Passes a criminal background check, as required by law

Time

  • Balanced Calendar: Steel City believes in creating a balanced calendar that prevents burnout for both our staff and students. This results in longer Fall, Spring and Winter Breaks as well as the famous Steel City Sprinkle Weekends- intentionally placed three-four day weekends throughout the school year.
  • Paid Time Off: All Steel City, full time salaried employees accrue paid time off throughout the year in the following categories.
  • Personal: All employees earn and accrue three personal days per year.
  • Sick: All employees earn and accrue two sick days per year.
  • Vacation: Calendar year employees can earn up to fifteen additional vacation days annually.
  • Jury Duty: Steel City employees summoned for jury duty, or subpoenaed to testify as a witness, will be granted the necessary time off upon furnishing proof of such written notice to serve. Absences for jury or witness duty are not deducted from any leave allowance. Full-time employees will be paid their regular salary up to ten (10) business days of jury duty.
  • FMLA: Steel City Academy will provide Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave to its eligible employees.
  • Holiday: Steel City observes the following holidays for salaried employees throughout the year. Additional holidays are determined by your employment category. (New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Election Day*, Veteran's Day, Wednesday before Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving, Friday after Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve Day, Christmas Day, Week between Christmas and New Years Day)
  • Bereavement: Steel City employees are eligible for bereavement leave for a certain amount of days based upon the relationship.
  • Professional Development Days: Steel City academic year employees receive up to three job embedded professional development days per year.

Retirement

  • 401k Program: Steel City employees can participate in a 401k Retirement plan with The Standard (formerly Securian). Steel City will contribute up to a 5% match.

Insurance

  • Health Insurance: Steel City offers UnitedHealthCare health insurance for all full time employees. Staff members have the opportunity to opt into either a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO). Steel City pays 80% of all premiums for all employees and dependents. The employee pays for 20% of premiums that are deducted at a pre-tax basis from payroll.
  • Dental Insurance: Steel City offers Principal Dental insurance for all full time employees. Steel City pays 50% of all premiums for all employees and dependents. The employee pays for 50% of premiums that are deducted at a pre-tax basis from payroll.
  • Vision Coverage: Steel City offers Principal vision insurance for all full time employees. The employee pays for 100% of premiums that are deducted at a pre-tax basis from payroll.
  • Disability, Life Insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D): Steel City employees working 30 hours per week, are automatically enrolled in short term disability, long term disability, life insurance, and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance immediately upon hire.
  • Workers' Compensation: Steel City pays for a comprehensive workers' compensation policy for all employees. Employees are entitled to benefits, if, while carrying out activities for the benefit of their employer, they suffer an injury by accident, a "specific traumatic incident", resulting in a hernia or back injury, or an occupational disease.
  • Supplemental Insurance: Steel City offers a comprehensive partnership with AFLAC for staff who are interested in acquiring supplemental insurance policies.

  • Salary: Steel City provides a competitive step and ladder salary scale for employees. The compensation scales are available upon request.
  • Performance Based Bonuses: Steep City employees are eligible to receive up to two bonuses per semester.

Additional Revenue: Steel City employees are eligible to receive various stipends: extracurriculars, talent team, after school tutoring, additional teaching sections and more.
