We are excited to announce our Gambling Disorder Clinician opening in Newark, NJ! The Gambling Disorder Clinician is intended to provide treatment and case management for individuals with a dual disorder of gambling disorder and mental health (MH) issues and/or gambling disorder and substance use disorder (SUD). The goal of these services are meant to deliver a holistic integrated framework of care that improves overall psychosocial functioning. Bring about awareness throughout the agency of the impact prevalence of gambling addiction.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities of an Gambling Disorder Clinician

  • Assess client’s counseling needs using evidence-based validated assessment tools (i.e. ASI, CASI, etc.), diagnose clients for substance use disorders using the DSM, and determine appropriate level of care based on ASAM PPC in order to provide individual and group therapy, psycho-education, case management, and crisis intervention to clients.
  • Implement an evidence-based gambling screen for all admissions to care utilizing the Brief Psychosocial Gambling Screen (BPGS)
  • Counselors should obtain previous records that are relevant to the current treatment episode and collaborate with clients to develop a written treatment plan that is client-centered, recovery oriented and includes goals with measurable objectives.
  • Provide active case consultations and maintain ongoing communication (direct & in-direct) with supervisor, Director, coworkers, families (if consent is given) and referral sources; participate in weekly Multidisciplinary Treatment Team meetings for assigned clients, clinical supervision, trainings, workshops, and etc. – as assigned by Director.
  • Provide a full gambling assessment for individuals identified as at risk for a gambling disorder.
  • Include gambling specific treatment in clients’ treatment plan/plan of care when a gambling disorder has been identified.
  • Provide psycho-education on gambling to all participants in the treatment program.
  • Provide treatment of gambling disorders through individual, group, family therapy for those with an identified gambling disorder or at risk of a gambling disorder.
  • Recovery support activities such as Gamblers Anonymous Meetings, relaxation techniques, stress reduction, finance, budgeting, SMART recovery, and peer recovery services.
  • Keep accurate records and clinical documentation, in accordance with Annex A requirements; complete clinical documentation for all counseling, education services, assessments, reassessments, referrals, and follow-up in the paper and/or electronic records while maintaining quality assurance standards are met.
  • Document complete and detailed facility incident reports for Director and any other persons stipulated to receive them, including referral source per contractual agreement and emergency contact when appropriate.
  • Develop client’s transfer and/or discharge plans to ensure movement to appropriate levels of care; contact referral source (s), provide case consultation and coordinate with referral sources (i.e., criminal justice agencies, schools, employers, DCP&P, and/or mental health treatment providers).
  • Perform additional functions supportive of the program as assigned by the respective Program Director.
  • Senior Counselor may have supervisory and administrative responsibilities.
  • Senior Counselor may be assigned staff members within the department for direct supervision.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Services field (Preferred). Counselor II, III, IV, will require a Master's degree
  • At least three (3) years’ experience in human services fieldwork (Preferred)
  • Experience in mental health and/or substance use program management, delivery, and evaluation (Preferred)

Required Licensing or Certifications:

  • CADC, LCADC, LAC, LPC, LCSW, LSW clinicians who at minimum agree to participate in the Rutgers 30-hour training sponsored by DMHAS with the intent of pursuing the ICGC I within two years.
  • The International Certification in Gambling Counseling (ICGC) level I or II and a bachelor’s or master’s degree in health, psychology, counseling, social work, education or other behavioral health profession.
  • CADC, LCADC, LAC, LPC, LCSW, LSW with one (1) year experience working with individuals who have a gambling use disorder and: (a) have completed the 30-hour gambling specific training toward ICGC I; (b) have commenced direct clinical contact hours in a IGCCB approved setting; and (c) are on track toreceive the ICGC I within two years.
  • Direct supervision provided by credentialed provider in Gambling Addiction Services
  • A valid Driver’s License

Specialized Skills, Abilities and Knowledge:

  • Strong working knowledge of ASAM-PPC 2-R Placement Criteria
  • Strong understanding of symptom criteria (as outlined in the DSM-IV) necessary to identify mental health and substance use disorders.
  • Understanding of recovery from serious mental illnesses, and co-occurring disorders.
  • Proficient in the following evidence-based practices: MI/Stages of Change; IMR; WRAP; DBT; SS; SBIRT; CRAFT; MAT; Harm Reduction; Tobacco Cessation; Zero Suicide Model; PACT.
  • In-depth knowledge of the causes and effects of addiction on individuals, families and society
  • Understanding of crisis management and the ability to deal with life threatening situations including the prevention of suicide and/or homicide
  • Knowledge of needs and risk assessment
  • Comprehension of case management and record keeping practices
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite
  • Cultural Sensitivity, Awareness and Humility
  • In depth knowledge and strict adherence to the Code of Ethics and client’s Bill of Rights
  • Ability to clinically justify treatment at various level of care using ASAM placement criteria
  • Ability to conduct clinical assessments under the supervision of a Clinical Supervisor
  • Effective clinical communication, both written and verbal
  • Ability to establish strong therapeutic alliances with clients and solid working relationships with staff
  • Ability to demonstrate cultural awareness, genuine positive regard and empathy regarding client concerns
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain strict confidentiality in performing counselor duties

Work Schedule:Monday through Friday 9:00am-5:00pm
