Description

Reporting to the chief financial officer (CFO), the Controller will be responsible for oversight of all finance, accounting and reporting activities. As the number-two executive to the CFO, the Controller will be involved in supporting presentations to the Board and Finance Committee and will work closely with the senior leadership team.

 

The Controller will lead all day-to-day finance operations for a budget of $18 million and supervise a team of 3 staff members including functional responsibility for general and grants accounting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and payroll. The Controller will ensure that the Italian Home for Children has the accounting systems, policies, and procedures in place to support effective administrative and program operations, and to conduct flawless audits. The Controller will work closely with administrative and program leaders and their teams, not only to educate regarding accounting and finance matters, but also to explore how the finance function can support operations overall.

 

In addition, the Controller will partner with the CFO, senior leadership, human resources (HR), and information technology (IT) to enhance and better integrate programmatic and finance functions.

This is a full-time hybrid position, requiring at least two in-office days per week.

Qualifications


Accounting and Finance:

  • Oversee maintenance and reconciliation of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, program budgets, expenditures, and all ledger activities.
  • Prepare yearly financial statements and Comm. of Mass. UFR; coordinate all related audits.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership abreast of the Italian Home’s financial status.
  • Assist the Italian Home for Children’s leadership in the annual budgeting and planning process; administer and review all financial plans and compare to actual results with a view to identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate.
  • Support the CFO in engaging the Board’s audit and finance committees around financial issues and trends.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Continuously collaborate with program leaders to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
  • Provide leadership in strengthening internal communications with staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • Leverage strengths of the current finance team members, help to clarify roles and responsibilities and develop and implement training programs in order to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.

 

Education/Experience:

  • This is a great opportunity for a leader with seven or more years of accounting and finance experience, ideally beginning in accounting and audit, followed by experience gathering, evaluating, presenting and reporting financial information to executive teams and external stakeholders.
  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting

Professional Knowledge/Experience:

  • Prior experience in a non-profit organization
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and Accounting systems is required
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to prioritize tasks
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to meet deadlines is a must
  • Ability to be flexible and work hard, both independently and in a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional teams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in the human services/behavioral health industry & 3rd party billing
  • Prior experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs
  • Prior experience with Sage/InTacct
  • CPA certification and/or Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration or public administration
