The Appraisal/Collateral Underwriter will be responsible for reviewing, evaluating, and analyzing property appraisals for mortgage loan applications to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, company policies, and industry standards. The role plays a critical part in mitigating risk, maintaining the integrity of the appraisal process, and ensuring that all loans meet the necessary criteria for approval.
Key Responsibilities:
Review and analyze property appraisals for mortgage loans to ensure they meet company policies, guidelines, and applicable regulatory requirements.
Assess the accuracy, completeness, and compliance of the appraisal reports with the industry standards and local market conditions.
Communicate with appraisers, loan officers, and other stakeholders to resolve any discrepancies, valuation issues, or concerns related to appraisals.
Ensure appraisals are in line with internal underwriting guidelines, market trends, and risk management practices.
Identify potential risks associated with property valuations, providing recommendations for resolution.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of appraisal practices, industry regulations, and changes in federal or state laws related to appraisals.
Review loan files and coordinate with underwriting teams to assess the overall loan file for completeness and accuracy.
Provide guidance to other departments and staff on appraisal-related questions, concerns, and procedures.
Ensure that all work is completed within established timelines to meet loan processing and approval deadlines.
Prepare and present detailed reports and summaries of appraisal reviews to senior management or other stakeholders.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Real Estate, or a related field (preferred).
5 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, with a focus on appraisal review or related experience in the real estate industry.
Strong understanding of real estate appraisal standards, methods, and valuation techniques.
Proficiency in reading and interpreting appraisal reports and market data.
Familiarity with mortgage industry guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, etc.).
Excellent analytical skills and attention to detail.
Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
Ability to make sound judgments and recommendations regarding appraisal values and loan risk.
Knowledge of relevant software tools (e.g., Collateral Underwriter, Encompass, PDR Reports, etc).
Preferred Skills:
DE Certification or Certification or licensure as a residential appraiser or a relevant mortgage industry certification.
Advanced knowledge of risk management in mortgage lending and appraisal processes.
